Advice for a Sweeter and Restful Night's Slumber for New Parents

Have you been up for the last couple of nights because your baby is always crying and seems only to fall asleep when in your arms? The answer lies in changing your little one's current sleep pattern. The following tips will prove useful in helping you and your baby enjoy better and sweeter bedtimes in the many nights to come.

First off, you should acknowledge the fact that babies have sleep patterns that change frequently. Some of your close family and friends or even a new acquaintance in the supermarket may have noticed you looking off weather, and each will have different opinions and advice on what you should do. However, the course you take will ultimately boil down to what works best for you and your baby. But other than that, you can try the following:

1. Sleep when they sleep

It is hard to get some shut-eye when you are a mother for the first time. But you need to sleep so that you can allow your mind and body to rest. If you can, try sleeping when the baby sleeps. So, do your best to ignore those random calls from visitors who are most likely not coming to see you but your little one. Forget the housework for the moment and enjoy a power nap with your baby.

If this is not something that you fill works for you because you have other children to care for or have to get back to work, then worry not; you can still manage to achieve restful sleep time in different ways.

2. Are you comfortable?

Make sure that any sleep you get is good quality by ensuring that your bed is in tip top condition. Many mattresses haven’t been replaced for years leading to uncomfortable, restful sleep. 3. All day and all of the night

Surprisingly, babies can be quick learners picking up things that they encounter on a daily basis. As such, you should establish a routine that helps your little one differentiate between day and night. You can do this by opening the curtain to allow natural light in as you play with the baby without minding the noise. Also, the issue of making sounds that might wake him or her up during the daytime naps should not worry you. The idea is to help your baby learn how to sleep through the background noises during the day. At night, keep the lighting dim, lessen the play and sounds and put him or her down as soon as you are done with the feeding, burping, or changing the diapers.

Ultimately, your baby will discover that play, noises, and all the fun stuff is during the day and winding down to rest is for the night.

4. The old routine

Above all, you need to have a bed-time routine, and you can start it even has this early stage of your baby's development. It can also serve as a perfect moment for month-and-child bonding. It is the best one-to-one time you can have with your little one. You can employ some tricks such as breastfeeding as you sing a lullaby, cuddles and kisses, baths or anything that has a soothing effect. Keep it consistent and the baby will associate such things with sleep.

5. Rock-a-bye…

Feeding and rocking the little one is a guaranteed trick that put every baby back to sleep, especially during the first few months. However, do your best to do less of this as the baby grows so that he or she can learn to fall asleep by himself or herself. Also, do not be too quick to rush to the cot at the first murmur you hear, give it a moment to see if the baby will settle down and doze off. Slowly break the link between feeding and sleep or rocking and sleep so that you take yourself out of the equation.
