Buying A Second Hand Car - 4 Questions You Need To Ask To The Seller

Most people buy a used car in order to save money, but the experience after bringing it home can be quite different from what it is when you purchase a brand new car. Thus, you have to make sure that your investment on the car is justified.  If you want to make sure of this, you need to ask some important questions to the seller before agreeing to a purchase.

Do You Have All The Necessary Papers?

Whether it comes to insurance papers, documents about the title ownership all the other documents, show them all to you. Never buy from a private dealership or seller who does not have the papers that are necessary. The vehicle could be stolen or have some outstanding financial dues on it, which you might be expected to pay back in order to avoid risks of repossession. Try to avoid buying any car with outstanding issues, no matter how good it looks. Conduct a car finance check beforehand to make sure of this.

Can I Have An Independent Mechanic Inspection?

A professional Mechanic can look at the used car and find out problems more easily than you can. He is likely to have much more experience in this matter.  Just because you find a second hand car looking good, it does not necessarily mean that it is in proper operable condition. If the seller starts making excuses, it is better to move away.

If he agrees to an inspection, have your mechanic carry out a thorough testing. The gaps between the panels need to be checked to ensure that they are of the same breadth.  The fluid levels in the engine coolant must also be checked. The odometer and mileage of the car must be evaluated.

What Is The Best Deal You Can Offer Me?

Find out whether the seller is ready to offer you a significant discount if the vehicle that he offers is not in good shape.  In any case, it is always better to avoid a purchase if you find that the vehicle in question needs extensive repairs.

Try to pay in a cashier's check rather than cash, so that a paper trail is left.  Make sure that you are in agreement with the seller on everything, and get a written bill of sale from him. You would not like to have an agreement based on one word of mouth as you like to show some proof of the sale or some changes that the seller agreed to make following the sale.

How Recently Have You Serviced The Car?

As a customer, you would like to have a vehicle that is up to date, serviced and paid for until recently. A well maintained car shows that the seller actually care for the vehicle, and you can benefit with such a car as your repair expenses and maintenance costs are likely to be lower. The more recently it has undergone repairs, the less you will be expected to make up-front expenses on it for maintenance or fixes.
