Showing 1 - 15 of 37 commentsSo Happy New Year Cat c:
Love the outfit!! Girly and strong at the same time. I would have totally fallen for you if I had been there. Were there any 'fit' Romeos there looking for a cute Juliet? How was the dancing?
Oh and don't think I'm a total snob (just a bit of a one). I don't mind mom's PA calling her by her first name at work. We are all the same. It was just that asking for "Maureen" on the phone was kinda grating to me since I didn't know this girl. I'm big on proper phone etiquette.
Yeah, being a jock (if you're a boy) is big here. I'm much more "dance belt" than "jock" I guess (does that slang make sense. If not I'll explain). But I would think I would qualify as "chatty, confident, and unusual." My group of friends value those qualities much more than the ability to throw or catch a ball. Bullies in the U.S. are usually after people who are "different." Anyway, we're both perfectionists and it's good to not worry so much about being "perfect." But being positive is okay.
I'm still thinking about my resolutions. So tell me yours first!! :D Seriously, the best resolution is just to do better next year in whatever we do.
xoxoxox,
Jackie
Hey Cat (or Juliet for today),
Yeah, it's boxing day here too or sometimes St. Stephen's day, but it's not really a holiday normally like it is in G.B. I do try to be polite and a gentleman. So thanks Miss Cat (as I bow gracefully). One of my mom's pet peeves is the increase in rudeness and unmannerliness we see here. Is that a trend in England too? But Americans are much more casual. I took a call at home a monyh ago from a girl who sounded about 18 asking how she could get in touch with "Maureen" 'cause she really had to reach her and her cell wasn't working. Well after about 5 minutes, I finally deciphered the fact that she (her name was Karen) was my mom's PA (Maureen) and that she had to contact her. On English TV shows, PAs still seem to call their bosses "Mr" or Ms." Oh well, life goes on! But speaking of manners and the "good old days," my sister Emma got a book for Christmas by P.D/. James called "Death Comes to Pemberley" a sort of mystery sequel to "Pride and Predjudice." I made Em promise tto pas it on as soon as she's finished. I could download it to my kindle, but somehow, I don't think Miss Austen would approve :ppp
You comments re: bullying were really wonderful. I always had this idea that bullying was less common in UK schools, but that's probably Jackie's imagination run wild. Actually, that High School period was the only time I really got bullied horribly. Despite being a pretty obvious target, I escaped elementary school with just a bit of teasing and a few "beat ups" partly because I was pretty popular with girls at the school. And after I left that HS (which btw is an excellent school), I've only had one incident and that was on a bus last year when two big girls told me I was sitting in their seat. And maybe you're right that exterior weirdness means inner comfort. The more I think of it, that's a brilliant comment Miss "Positive and Perfect."
Hey Cat,
I guess it's "boxing" day in England, right? (See I love BBC America). I'm sure you're providing gift to all your servants and they'll bow and say "Thank you Miss Catriona!." :DDD Ha ha, all three of us went to Etiquette school. A lot of it was junk (like when to use a fish fork or how to escort a debutante properly) but a lot of it was pretty useful. I know how to ask a girl to dance properly (and even what to do if she says "Yucck no way!") and to stand up when a girl enters the room (even Jules or my girl cousins!). Mom was always big on manners and I agree with her.
Oh the reason I thought it was a "Catriona" rule rather than a "Jackie" rule was because it was your "15 day" blog that inspired me to come up with the idea.
I know what you mean about finding it hard to talk about things on a really deep level. I can be pretty superficial, but hate asking for help. When I went to an all boys high school for a few months, I was really bullied badly, because I was different. I used to cry at home and hated 2 go to school, but I never told anybody. Then Julia heard kids from our old school talking and laughing about it and she made me come clean. She made me tell mom and that led, eventually, to a new school that I love because all the kids here are "different."
And, oh yeah, bankers are definitely not airheads!! On the contrary, thy're some of the smartest people around. But they don't always use those brains in the right way.
"I just wish that for a week you could have what you want, realise you don't really want it and then be grateful for everything when you go back to normal." Wow, how true! Wouldn't that be great? With regard to "fears and demons," you don't come across as a person who would have difficulty taking positive steps. Don't laugh, but I see you as a 'list maker' with goals and steps all laid out, probably because you write so clearly and well. Am I totally off base?
But We're all a little bit like that; it's human inertia. And maybe it's better not to be totally assured about what your dreams are and how to realize them. But you said "There's a reason for that." Did you mean there is a reason and you know what it is, or there is a reason, but I can't figure it out? But I do believe we can overcome our fears and internal demons. I don't think burying them is a good idea. It's important to understand what's hiding under our beds waiting to pounce on us. But, once we do that, maybe the best thing is to go on in the face of those fears as best we can. And, don't laugh, but making lists and taking positive steps, however small, does help.
For what it's worth, my big fear is that my talents won't be right for the world that we'll inherit. My best talent is writing, but I see newspapers declining and the same with books. (The only people I know who read much are all girls and that makes me sad for boys). That's why I got interested in interior decorating as a plan B, because I figured that there will always be rich people who love having someone like me decorate their mansions. Not very noble, huh?
On a personal level, I'm most worried about never finding a special person to spend my life with. Being a bit outrageous, has been one way I've dealt with bullying and harassment. As weird as it sounds, the more flamboyant I became, the more kids actually began to like me or at least leave me alone. And I've made lots of friends, but I'm afraid nobody regards me as the type of boy that would be a "boyfriend." I know I'm young, but I worry that while a try to be true to myself, "Jackie" is at least a little bit my own creation ("He's alive, Dr. Frankenstein, but he's wearing makeup!!") and now I've got to live with him.
Sorry for waxing all psychological, but YOU STARTED IT!!! (Just kidding!). Have a nice boxing day and Christmas vacation. And OHHH, I haven't heard any talk about ballet outfits!!! We simply can't delay it much longer. You absolutely have to wear a dress of course, but your accessories are important too. Also your hair and makeup if you want to look your best when you run into Prince Charming. . Are you going with your parents or friends? I simply can't do this on my own. Work with me here!! :p :p :p
xoxoxox,
Jackie
Hiiii Cat (you could be "Cate" too I guess if you wanted),
I don't have time for a proper response because we're having friends and neighbors over for Christmas Eve tonight (our neighbors cook tomorrow!!). So Jules and I are trying to help to keep mom's stress level at a minimum. So far it's working.
You raise a lot of interesting questions that I need to ponder. All I know (and I'm not "jiving" here) is that you're really special--talented, pretty (never seen you, but I'm sure of it), smart, and all around sweet and nice. I'm you know I'm not the typical teenage boys you mentioned (but I guess you knew that), so I'm being sincere, not looking 4 "benefits." :D. So I'll answer more fully next week. But for now, it's Christmas eve south of London, so I'll just say:
Merry Christmas
Une Bonne Noel
Feliz Navidad (and)
Nollaig Shona Duit (which is Irish and pronounced NO-Lihg HO-nuh ghwich)!
Oh Cat (I like that by the way, kinda edgy), we’re both sooo much alike in some ways; neither of us like to offend. And you are never offensive. You’re a sweet, polite girl and I’m so sorree for using the word ‘snide.’ It was totally the wrong word to use. I was trying to use some word that captured your comment about us being rich, and that’s unfortunately the one I picked. And I’m supposed to be a writer who always uses the correct word. So please accept my apologies, Miss Cat (I learned that in etiquette school!)
I love corresponding with you. It's so Jane Austemish. But neither of us is very "terse" shall we say. So I was wondering if we could come up with one of "Cat's rules" so we could keep each other updated on a regular basis but not feel so guilty about not replying istantly.
I’m glad you like the photos. It started out as mom’s idea and then Julia and I just went crazy. There’s one holly tree there that’s about three feet tall and the lights look like an A-line skirt. :D I added a few more today.
You could be my sister anytime. I think you understand me a LITTLE bit better than Jules (I think I puzzle her, but she does try!). And I do try to boost people up (without being dishonest) because I've been down to and my mom and Emma always helped me when I wasn't feeling great about being Jackie.
I'm a perfectionist too!! I like the ornaments on a Christmas tree to have some symmetry even though they're all different. I have one ornament (a bear) that we got on my one trip to the UK (when I was 10). I never asked you where in GB you live, did I? I've been to London, Cheltenham, and Yorkshire.
Wherever it is, I'm sure Romeo and Juliet will be lovely. And you'll be gorgeous even if there aren't too many boys to eye you. Oh what does "fit boys" mean? I guess it's like Americans would call someone a "real" boy (not something, I've ever been called btw).
Sometime if you get a chance you should try to read "Gatsby." Fitzgerald was a great writer and this was his masterpiece. He later ran into trouble with booze and died pretty young. He's buried near me in Rockville, MD and his grave has the last line from "Gatsby."
"So we beat on, boats against the currents, borne back ceaselessly into the past"
Isn't that great. Oh, they're making a film version now with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan (I love her!!). I can't wait.
I'm glad that I'm at least one of your "boy" friends. Jenn is like a sister to me, really! I have sen the "In Betweeners" on BBC America. It's kinda funny in a gross teenage boy way. The lead boy is also in something called "Friday Night."
I did see that TV special with Matt Damon and, as you said, it was " very shocking as well as interesting." Unfortunately, there are too many greedy people and they can really make it worse for the rest of us. The money that wall street peopl make is obscene to me, although I guess movie stars and athletes are similar, although a lot of them have talent at least. The MM film was terrific. Great cast: Kenneth Branagh, Judy Dench, and a came by Derek Jacobi. And Michelle Williams was terrific as MM. And we went for Thai food afterwards--one of my faves!!
Oh we made lots of cookies yesterday. My favorites are pizelles. Theyr'e thin Italian waffle cookies flavored with aniise (tastes like licorice) and made with a special iron. Here's what they look like. They are really good.
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/classic-pizzelle-recipe />
Neither of us are deluded I think. It's just that we see the best on the other country ("The grass is always greener"). I like diversity. I think it's good for us to know and interact with lots of different kind of people. One thing that has helped the US is our abilty to absorb and integrate lots of different people. That's one reason I like DC. We have a large LGBT population as well as immigrants from countries around the world. It makes for lots of good restaurants! I could never be happy living too far from a city.
Have a Merry Christmas, Cat.
Oh I missed your (snide?) comment about the trees around the house. :D Mom has a great job and we're "well off" I guess but definitely not rich. Our house here is really pretty small like most houses that are inner suburbs. The houses further out can be enormous. We visited former neighbors and their house is like 4000 sq fy. It was really wayyy too big. We also have a small house at the beach in New Jersey. Jules and i also put lights up there even tho we're away because we'll be going there for New Years.
Oh and I aced by Costume Design exam. I love the teacher, Miss Sheridan, and am a total teacher's pet. She says I should definitely be a costume designer. Well, I hope I find something I can do to make money and be happy!!
Oh Well I never!! I'm sure I posted last :D I was like, "why haven't I heard from Catriona? I hope I didn't say something wrong? I bet I bored her to death." Seriously, I always try to be a gentleman (I learned that in etiquette classes :p). But let me know if I say something that's offensive.
Well, here we are anyway. So there!! But yeah I guess it is more casual in the States. You guys are more formal, but more polite in a way that I think is charming. Jules is turning into more of a lady. See how my influence is finally working? She really doesn't know how pretty she is.
The tree will be nice, but not totally "jackieish." I don't think a pink tree with sequinned ornaments will work :D. Actually it's a nice fresh fir tree and I put the lights on and my sis and I will decorate it together. But I simply must be in charge. Jules is simply not enough of a perfectionist for me. I'd like 2 show you a picture, but how do I do that here? It's on my FB wall or my photos somewhere if you want to ck it out if it's okay with your 15 day rule (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.133668200078555.22248.100003061284875&type=3) />
Oh you will notice the photos are a bit dark (artistic I say) because Jules and I were arguing about which angle to use and forgot 2 turn on the flash.
I've seen the Billy Elliot movie about 5 times but never the show. OMG, the ballet should be sooo fabulous. That's wonderful. You definitely have 2 tell me what ur wearing (so I can critique it). Seriously, you'll be the prettiest, best dressed girl there and the boys will be cking you out just like Jules. My aunts took me to the ballet a few weeks ago and it was really great. It's was a ballet version of an American novel called the Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald. Have you heard of it? Anyway it's set in the 1920s and the costumes were all flapper-girlish and really lavish. I hope you have a fabulous time. Is it in London?
Being "R" rated usually involves sex or violence or sometimes excessive profanity (not much worse than what you hear at school). If a movie is "R" you're not supposed to go if your under 17 unless accompanied by an adult. How absurd!! Like it would be ok for a 13 yo girl to go with her 21 yo boyfriend or something but not with her 16 yo sister.
Oh the dressing table you did sounds beautiful. It's so funny, but I'm the only boy I know with a dresser in his room, but I can't imaging being without it. And do you have a working fireplace in your room or just the mantle? Yeah, if it;s historic it does add value. I love my room. It's my place so it's kind of an extensio of me I guess.
You may be right about Americans being more positive. I could spend days talking about my negatives but then you would probably dump me as a friend and I wouldn't want that. You remind me a bit of my girl BFF Jenn who has lived next door since we were 8. She and I can talk about anything and it never seems forced. She's got a boyfriend now but he says it's okay for here and me to still hang out. Probably not a compliment, but I'm happy anyway.
But I think that the British humility is endearing too. Americans can be pretty arrogant sometimes like yelling "USA" at sporting events and stuff. And I agree that you should celebrate and be proud of achievements (so tell me about this report!!) but it's nice to be kind to people who aren't as good too. And I bet you're always sweet and polite.
The economy and American politics have everyone bummed out here now. Everything was so positive in 2008 with Obama but there's a lot of gloom and doom now. The Republican candidates are awful, so I will still pass out flyers for Obama nd keep hoping. I took Civics last year and we discussed our political stalemate. How hard it is to get things done. But we do have an amazing ability to laugh even when things aren't going well. Your parliamentary system seems to work better.
Maybe we should swap families for a month and you could live here and I could live in the UK. Except my family would probably fall in love with you and never let you go home while your family would be putting me on the plane early. You know how we yanks are about British accents!:D
Are you planning on watching the Dr. Who Christmas special?
I can't wait to hear about the ballet. They'll probably have your picture in the papers as this fabulous unknown who stole the spotlight.
Omigosh Catriona, who answered whom last? :DDD Thing are pretty well here. I have my last exam tomorrow, but it's my best subject--Costume Design--so I'm in good shape I think. My aunts took Jules and me to see "Much Ado about Nothing" at the Shakespeare Theater on Saturday. It was really great. Julia even wore a dress and (I hate to admit it) she looked fabulous. I made her put on a little makeup too. At intermission I caught two guys cking us out and they weren't looking at me :D
Pretty much ready for Christmas. Jules and I put up lights on the little trees around our house here and in NJ. I posted some photos on FB and maybe I'll put them here too. We bought a joint gift for mom (a great handbag) and I've bought presents for Jules and Emma. Our inside tree is up and lighted and I'll decorate it tonight or tomorrow.
I'm hoping for "Billy Elliot" tickets for Christmas (my favorite new musical) and some fashion books. If ur interested, ck out my blog posts at
http://www.becomegorgeous.com/user/Jackie_Walsh-blog/fashion_books_for_gifts-3069.html />
http://www.becomegorgeous.com/user/Jackie_Walsh-blog/billy_elliot-3068.html />
My mom's taking me to see "My Week with Marilyn" tomorrow. It's rated "R" in usa so I need an adult (how silly!!). But mom wants to see it too. I love Marilyn Monroe. So beautiful, and so vulnerable. Makes me want 2 protect her (Good luck MM if I'm protecting U :p)
This thing with interior decorating came up when I redid my room. I really loved doing it and it's so cute!!! I found an old dressing table in my grandmother's attic, painted it, and it looks really cool. It has three mirrors and lots of little drawers for stuff. I've also picked out a lamp and a set of nesting tables for my mom and they are really perfect. Pls don't think I'm bragging, but I really have a knack I think. So you design the houses and I'll decorate them. What a team!!!
If I don't talk 2 you, have a great Christmas!
xoxoxo
jackie
Hiiii Catriona, I saw ur blog post and realized I haven't said hello in a while. (like over a month!!!). How are you doing? Is school going well? I have three exams this week and then it's Christmas vacation.
btw, I liked your blog post a lot. I would really love to not check FB for fifteen days or not eat candy for 15 days either. I should really give it a try. I'm glad you're still studying design and architecture. I think you could become a really terrific architect because of ur design sense. I'm actually now thinking of interior design as a backup in case fashion writing doesn't work out.
Hope you have a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year.
xoxoxoxo,
Jackie
I think you'd love "Ab Fab" since you're so fabulous yourself :)))) Let's start a cross-Atlantic movement to save Downton. I bet you would make a very regal princess, but also a sweet cowgirl too, not a cowboy of course.
Oh I forgot to tell you that the best trick or treat costume I say was this girl who wore a clear plastic poncho, had long streamers hanging from her shoulders, and carried a little plastic umbrella. She was a jellyfish!!! Isn't that cute. Scary movies don't scare me too much (except for "Rosemary's Baby" that was really scary) but they do make me laugh, especially the really bad ones.
Thank you for the fashion suggestion, but OMG, I know I wanted to be butch, but I do have my standards. I don't own baggy jeans (ewwwww) and have a few big tees and pairs of trainers (I love what you call them much better than "sneaks") but they're all in pastel shades which might ruin the butch effect. I guess my red checkerboard sneaks are more butch than ballet slippers :p
Actually, I put a proposed outfit together and posted in as a BG Q&A. Now, I'll just practice my "manly" walk and learn to talk about sports.
ttyl cowgirl or it it Pricess Cate? :))))
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is a show that ran originally in the late 90s I think. It's based loosely on a movie with the same name. It's about a girl and her friends who are into slaying vampires, demons, and whatever. It's very well done with a lot of irony and funny dialogue. Over the course of the series, Buffy and her friends went from high school, through college, and beyond. The star (Sara Michelle Geller) is now in another series. She's my sister Julia's role model. Ab Fab is really called "Absolutely Fabulous" and it comes from the UK. It stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley who are totally hilarious, although pretty dissipated.
I really do love Downton Abbey too. I hope it doesn't really end. The British do those kinds of period costume dramas better than anyone, and your actors are sooooo good. I'll be on the lookout for MIC. We have lots of those quasi-reality shows too. Some of them are good, but most are terrible.
Ha ha ha, Catriona has princess-envy!!!!!! And her I thought you were more into cowboys and Indians. Kate is really a gorgeous princess though, even more than Diana.
I stayed home with mom and gave out candy too last night. Jules was at a party with her posh school friends. We watched "Carrie" and "Dracula" on TV and then a classic BAD movie called "Plan 9 from Outer Space" that was so awful, it was wonderful.
I'm going to Julia's homecoming hockey game this Saturday. Imagine, me at a sporting event. I promised Julia I would try to look suitably butch so I didn't embarrass her, but I'll still try to look good.
Nothing wrong with being a critic. I like to write reviews too. The thing about plays is that you don't have to be on stage to have fun or make a contribution. As I said, my onstage time in this play if mostly spent on the ground crying. But there's lots of backstage stuff that your sens of design might really be perfect for: set design, costumes, directing, etc.
"Friends" reruns are still on over here. I've seen most of them at least once, but still can laugh at them. We watch a lot of reruns: I love "Ab Fab," one of yours :D and Jules's favorite is "Buffy" but I like her too. We watch reruns because a lot of the new shows are so lame. I like Glee (although it's not as good this year, "Parks and Recreation," Modern Family," and "Thirty Rock." Oh, and I really like Dr. Who!!!! Also there's a British show that's on over here (kind of a high clas soap) called "Lark Rise to Candelford." My mom and I watch it all the time, but Jules thinks it's too girly. There's a character on this show, Dorcas Lane. whose played by the same woman who played Saffy in Ab Fab. Wow!
Ha, ha. You're so funny, Catriona. When I'm famous, I'll come to the U.K. and get you runway seats at my shows, right next to Pippa :p.
SATs are really called "Scholastic Aptitude Tests" and have two parts: math and Reading comprehension. They aren't required to graduate from high school, but almost all universities require a pretty good SAT score. I'm taking preliminary SATs this year and the real SATs next year.
Oh, how did your speech go? What was the subject.
Happy Halloween, dahling!!!!! :D
I've always liked costumes I guess. We're doing the musical "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" at school and I'm on the costume team.( I also have a small cameo part as the city boy who gets beat up by Tom in the first act. :D) But I've learned so much. Two of us actually made the tulle petticoats that Becky Thatcher wears. I thought it would be impossible, but it turned out to be pretty easy. The boys costumes are pretty boring, like boys clothes always are sigh!!!
Ha ha, you're probably right about Americans and the royals. We played games about knights and princesses and you probably played Cowboys and Indians. I mean I like President Obama a lot, but he gets criticized all the time so it's not the same as a royal family. Plus when you get a girl who's a commoner (even though a rich one) who becomes a princess, it seems so fabulous to us here.
My older sister adopted Kate and Pippa last February from a shelter and, since there was so much news about the engagement and wedding picked the names. They really are sisters (and are princesses too :p). When Emma went away to college, she left me in charge of them, but Jules helps too sometimes. Sasha and Sweep sound great too. Cats are so neat, aren't they? In fact, Pippa is walking around the keyboard as I try to type this. ha ha
You know that different types of people become famous. J.K Rowling was just a single mom working away on her idea until suddenly she became one of the most famous writers in history. So don't sell yourself short. Actually, I'll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell anyone!!!! I don't really care all that much about being fabulous and famous! I just like doing interesting things and getting the personal satisfaction from doing them, whether it's writing a poem or making a petticoat. Of course it's nice to have a family and friends that love you and encourage you, but who cares about what everyone else says.
Ha ha, hope I didn't spoil my image!!
You'll do great on your GCSE's. When do you take them? Are they essay or short answer exams. Do they cover all the fields you study? We don't have anything like that here, just SATs which are a big factor in which universities will accept you.
I bet your pumpkin will look awesome. Do kids go trick or treating in the UK? If so, you could put on a witch or zombie mask and scare them. :d
When I was younger I loved dressing up. I actually was a pirate one year. But you'll be totally "shocked" to find out that I often dressed like a girl. My mom dressed me like Shirley Temple when I was 8 because I had lots of blonde curls. That costume was really fun with a short full skirt and tap shoes. Two years ago, My girl BFF Jenn went as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I was her witch girlfriend, Willow. (Do you get those reruns in the UK?) Last year, I was a flapper and Jenn was a gangster.I got a silver lame flapper dress at a thrift shop (a little too short, but fabulous) and styled my hair in a bob. This year three of us are being the three witches from Macbeth at school, but nothing at night. I thought about being Pippa or Kate (the girls, not my cats :D), but they are so beautiful, I felt silly trying to look like them. It's easier to do someone like Gaga or Brittany.
Study hard Catriona, I want to be able to say I knew you when you're famous :D
ha ha, I guess I can be a bit outrageous. I just can't help it. But I hope I do it in a nice way. So, your mum's with the girls and you're with the boys. Just don't let them make you do all the cleaning up and stuff. I hope you enjoy your sushi. I have to confess that I can eat some sushi, but don't like all of it. Eel tastes funny to me :D But I like most cooked seafood.
Jules's party was lots of fun. It was mostly family except for two of her girlfriends from school. They can sometimes be a little snobby and act all preppy but they were nice last night. Since it's near Halloween, we usually wear costumes for her birthday, but didn't last night. I love Halloween, but don't plan much for this year because there's no parties to go to. I'm too old to trick or Treat and to young for all the adult stuff down town which can be pretty wild. Well, enjoy going back to school next week :p
