The barrel size depends a lot on what kind of curls you want to have. If you want to create loose curls or "beachy" waves, pick an iron that is one to two inches in diameter. If you want smaller, tighter ringlets, got for a .75 to one-inch thick iron. Some curling irons come with multiple barrel sizes, but they are pretty expensive. This link is pretty helpful IMO

I would like to get a good curling iron or wand but I'm not sure what size barrel to get. Its about chest length but it is extremely thick.
