Thank you for an interesting and very thoghut provoking post. I used to think that avant-garde fashions by the likes of Galliano and McQueen were irrelevant because they really were not worn in the street, nor embraced by the masses. However I agree with you, and I now think that clothing can be viewed as wearable art not intended for daily use. As well, the overblown creativity seen in early McQueen or Galliano matures with experience, and often becomes something that is both wearable, but also a form of very creative and original art. From a commercial point of view, if avant-garde fashion creates a memorable image that is either interesting or beautiful, and it sells perfume or any other product, or even allows the designer the means to continue his or her vision, then it is successful. The Viktor & Rolf dress with big cream and pink fabric loops is beautiful, and while very dramatic and highly styled, in a slightly less exaggerated form it would be an exquisite and memorable gown, certainly more original than the mostly strapless evening gowns that all the women wore to the Academy Awards.
