After quite a few fashion risks taken at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards and the 2014 MTV VMAs, the Emmy red carpet was a welcome return to glamor, dominated by bold shades of red and gorgeous white gowns, along with a surprise accessory.
See the biggest Emmys 2014 red carpet trends, and decide which outfit is your favorite from the multitude of stunning looks on display at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, during television’s biggest night of the year.
Giving the red carpet a run for its money, many actresses opted for bright red creations, and most of them managed to pull it off the color beautifully.
The most impressive red looks included Christina Hendricks in Marchesa, Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhuillier, January Jones in Prabal Gurung, Claire Danes in Givenchy, and Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji.
The other contender for the top spot among the Emmys 2014 red carpet trends, white was also a big presence at Nokia Theatre, with the column dress being a favorite. The most memorable white looks include Michelle Monaghan in Giambattista Valli, Kristen Wiig in Vera Wang, and Anna Chlumsky in Zac Posen, while Sofia Vergara added a bit of drama to the all white look with a Roberto Cavalli gown with silver accents.
Bringing even more sparkle to the 2014 Emmys, a few celebrities decides to go all out with shimmering metallics. Gwen Stefani chose a silver Atelier Versace two-piece look, which slightly hinted at the crop top trend, while Amy Poehler rocked a Theia silver sequined gown. “Orange Is The New Black”’s Taryn Manning pushed the trend further with a stunning gold creation.

One of the most unexpected Emmys 2014 red carpet trends, bows also made a splash at Nokia Theatre. Allison Williams wore Giambattista Valli Couture with a black bow, 6th time Emmy winner Allison Janney went for a purple dress with a big statement bow, and Cat Deeley opted for a Burberry gown in antique rose with another striking bow.
Not nearly as popular as red, but still making a strong presence on the red carpet, blue ranged from Julia Robert’s Elie Saab dress to Viola Davis’ Escada gown, but cobalt blues made the biggest splash. It was the color of choice for Edie Falco, Mayim Bialik, and Melissa Raunch. “Masters of Sex”’ Keke Palmer also rocked a cobalt blue gown from the Rubin Singer Resort 2015 collection.
Deep plunging necklines are also among the Emmys 2014 red carpet trends, with Sarah Silverman and Julie Bowen in Peter Som showing a lot of cleavage. Even pregnant Hayden Panettiere decided to go low with a Lorena Sarbu gown, a sequined chiffon creation which showed off her baby bump and also helped her sparkle.
While most reds were bright, Julia Louis-Dreyfus opted for a lighter shade, and other stars went straight for beautiful shades of coral. Heidi Klum wore a Zac Posen Resort 2015 gown, described by the designer as a “coral angel” look. “Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland also rocked coral, but paired with white, in an ensemble designed by “Project Runway” season 4 winner Christian Siriano.
One of the cutest Emmys 2014 red carpet trends, halter dresses were also popular for television’s biggest night. “Downtown Abbey”’s Michelle Dockery wore a colorblocked Rosie Assouling creation, and Mindy Kaling chose a halter gown by Kenzo. Lizzy Caplan also rocked the trend in Donna Karan Atelier, one of the few black dresses of the night.
Thin and delicate belts also showed up on the red carpet at the Emmys. Julia-Louis Dreyfus belted her red Carolina Herrera gown, and other actresses who opted to show off their waistline included Angela Bassett and Kim Dickens.
The biggest nail trend of the evening was pink manicures, including Kaley Cuoco, Zooey Deschanel and Lena Dunham, but the most interesting accessory among the Emmys 2014 red carpet trends was the ear cuff. Adding a bit of edge to a glamorous look, actresses Taylor Schilling (in Zuhair Murad), Michelle Dockery, January Jones all rocked a statement ear cuff.
