I need some classic literature suggestions

For summer homework (ugh) I have to read a novel written by and American author that is classic literature. I also want it to be interesting and like fun to read. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! (:

Well... I do know that there are plenty of good classics out there. There was one point when I went on a classic literature spree... and the thing with these books is that they're hard to get into at first... but when you get into them... they get good.
Here are some ideas:
You can stick some Mark Twain in there...
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe - about slavery
You could pick any John Steinbeck book (they're short)... I've read the Moon is Down and Of Mice and Men
If you like creepy horror stuff (not me)... you could try some Edgar Allen Poe
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - I haven't read this one but you always hear about it
Call of the Wild by Jack London - nice, short, and to the point
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is another one I've heard a lot about
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck - now this book is an adventure (hear my sarcasm)... if you like pre-communist China and really long books, go for it!
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - I've heard REALLY good things about this book...
Here is a site with a really long list if you want further info:
Whatever you chose, I hope you enjoy it :)
