weeell it started off as a music genre.

Like, emotional music. i think emo stands for emotional

then people started making it into a fashioon/trend

& now its become a 'state of mind'. Like, how people say that if your 'emo' then you selfharm blahblaah.

what midsummer said pretty much, it's associated with cutting oneself on the wrist mainly and being overly emotional, in a sad way. It's another stereotype, but , yeah, it's a sorta it's onw fashion/trend, and it's associated with wearing black colours, and heavy eyeliner, on top of all of that. =\ hmm..not to be confused with gothic xD

here they use emo for like indie people. men with skinny jeans and long hair, who look abit dirty. they wear black but they are not gothic they are sort of half stylish half goth.

not every emo self harms but they are more likely to be pessimistic and see the glass as half empty. usually they feel alone like no one understands them outside their circle. but they are very EMOTIONAL in the negative way

it started out when punk music became more focused on emotions

then it turned into a fashion trend, generaly people who listened to this new "emo" music dressed a certain way

now it's more a state of mind

mostly it's the posuers who have made it such a stereotype, the ones who think that it's all about self harm and making up fake problems, the ones who think that being emo is the in thing and that it makes them cool

not all emos cut, not all emos wear black at all or eyeliner for that matter. it's about being emotional (usually sad and mad) but for REAL reasons, emos usually feel very alone because nobody can see beneath their apperance or even understand what emo means (as in people call them faggotts and assume that they cut just because of their clothes). It's also about expressing your emotions, through your clothes, drawings wrting songs/poetry, and any other way. Anyone can be emo, you DON'T have to dress like it or listen to the music (although most do) to be emo.
