How do you apply hairspray?

So I have really long hair and I tried making a mohawk like style with hairspray but it didn't work. Is there a specific way to apply hairspray? I just took a strand and sprayed it a lot... but it went down the next second and just got all wet and sticky :\ What am I doing wrong?

to your first question: not nessesarily
and to your second question: you're putting too much in one specific area.
and i think why that didnt work is because of your hair length

make sure you got a really good holding hairspray, u might need to use gel too. and when you do spray, stop but don't let the hair down yet keep it up for 10sec maybe then let go of it.
if ur hair is thick and is really long it will be harder to make it stay up.

sometimes its harder doing a mohawk style with long hair...especially if its thick... make sure you have a good hairspray and gel and teasing it would help too

on longer hair to make a mohawk i dont think it will work, but u can try elmers washable glue i know it sounds weird but i did it with my boyfriends hair it stayed all day and it washes out really easy. But gel works to u just have to get the extra strengh kind

But why would the length matter? I've seen guys with much longer hair than mine pulling off spikes and mohawks. I was trying to get something like this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2599/4091143127_806c0ac345.jpg He's got long hair too, and it always works for him :\

it may be because the guys use a gel to get it to do that

I kept it up for even longer than 10 seconds, but it had no effect :/ My hair is not thick at all so it's really just the length that could be problematic... Oh would spraying my hair upside down work better? I just thought about it! Btw I thought the gel was used for really short hair only, since it's even less efficient than spray :/

No, he uses hairspray only, I know that for sure...

hmm. well i've tried doing spikes with my hair when it was shoulder-length with only hairspray and it didnt hold up.

and can also depend on how big of chunk you are grabbing and spraying. you could also maybe look up tutorials on youtube.

I'll try using gel too then, once I get my hair cut. I read about the teasing thing, but I don't see how it can help get straight spikes o.o I'll try it though.
