What product do you use to get the "mohawk" stand up look on a boy?

My son just came home from a trip with his dad and had a new haircut i.e. the mohawk cut. I would have been mad but it looks awesome. But.... I cant get it to go back up. It looks good down so the stylist did an awesome job, but dad has no clue what they put on it. Tried some gels but prickly and looks wet. Won't do hairdryer on 5 yr old but Dad swears the guy didn't use one. His hair is dark brown, wavy and thick. Any ideas?

Well my boyfirend had a little mohhawk but his wasn't long enough that he had to put anything in it to make it stand up. I would just say some strong hold styling gel. Not too much though, you dont want his hair to look wet and gross haha. Good luck (:
