Movie film festival ideas. I need help REALLY bad!

Me and my friend are doing a film for this film festival. We've been constantly thinking all day but nothing really works.. the topics that we have are either action, romance, comedy, or stop-motion. So any ideas would help! :D It's due the 26th of February so we need suggestions kind quick.. :)

Post-apocalyptic wasteland epic, in short. Something like the day after the world ended. Plot: a couple of guys are leaving downtown san fancisco (population: 27) to see what the world is like after the pandemic killed 90% of the world population. They can't even imagine what life could possibly be like in a world where there's 6 billion people - they've only ever known so few.

Apocalyptic films are cheap to make at home (basically need camping equipment as props, and dirty jeans as costume). For reference see: A Boy and his Dog; 12 Monkeys; Mad Max; 28 Days Later; Omega Man; Escape from New York; Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell (comedy).

If you make it in documentary-style, a handheld digital camera with minimal editing will make a great impression.
