Age Difference in Relationships?

What do you consider appropriate age difference for a couple?

For example, I just met this guy online who is 4 years older than me. At 21, he's in college, and I'm a 17 yr. old high school senior. In a year, I'll be going to the same college. I'm quite mature for my age, and I don't see any major age barriers that could impede our relationship in that way. That said, I'm curious as to your opinions of whether we could possibly work as a couple, even with the age difference. I have a feeling my extremely judgmental family will not be pleased, but I'm willing to work through that-- even if it comes to me keeping the relationship secret from them. Advice, please.

5 years tops is ideal for me. they'd say it doesn't matter.. really, it does because priorities and preferences change as we age. One could outgrow the other it and/or the other one fails to measure up. This can totally strain the relationship and lead to resentment.

in your case, i don't see any reason as to why you can't hit it off. 4 years is not so bad especially if you have the same core values and think on a relatively the same wavelegnt. go for it, hun!

Agree with mistress1209.... :D but when people are older the age difference limit gets higher so when you're 25 the difference CAN be even 8 yrs or something... :D

I think it's fine:) it's not that big of a deal cause your almost 18 right? thats legal age to actually do stuff but I think 17 and 21 is fine its not that big of a diffrence

it's totally fine, 17 and 21 isn't that big of a difference, after all age is just a number right? but before you jump into anything with him, make sure he's as willing as you mkay? :)

yeah, once you're out of high school, I dont think 4 years is a big difference at all! =D

my sister and her bf are 17 and 21 atm .. and they've been dating since she was 15...

it depends completely on you as a person

I'm 16 and my boyfriend is 20, i'm going to be 17 on August the 20th an he's going to be 21 on the 21st of December, age doesnt matter if you like them. (btw it doesnt count as rape or anything illegal over here as i'm over the age of 16 and thats our age of consent) xoxo

the only thing to really watch out for is being twitterpated and falling in love too fast and not having your eyes open if something fishy is going on

you want to always make sure your head is clear enough to spot warning signs of cheating or if he's not treating you right.

other than that i don't see a big issue with a 4yr difference when the younger party is over 16 and mature
