if you want it to show i imagine you'll need a bright red colour. If you put a dark colour on a dark colour, i'm afraid you'll only see bits of that darkish purple colour , especially in the sun.

darkish purply red= will show in sunlight on dark brown hair depending own the hue your hair is, i can only go by what i know seeing as to i don't know how you look

bright coloured red- defiitely will stand out i'm sure

you could always go for lightening your hair colour first then adding the darkish purpley red =x

to get it good and red you'll either have to bleach it first or dye it several times over a few nights

if you don't it will turn a kind of purpleish color.

if your hair is all your natural colour it will go red say if your hair is a number 3 on a colour chart. If you put a number 7.66 on your hair with 40% peroxide it will lift to a really good red. You dont have to use that number its just an example, but with your hair it should start with a 7.

If your hair is dyed dark you need to bleach it up first to strip the colour then colour the mid lengths and ends then the roots to make it all the same colour.
