Do I have to get my hair CUT, so that it lays thicker on the top and thinner on the bottom?

I have long thick fine hair and I have about 2 layers near the bottom of my hair. I keep seeing people with hair so that it lays thicker on the top and thinner on the bottom. I tried to get it cut like that about 6 months ago but it doesn't look anything like it. Is it because my layers aren't really near the top of my head? I don't want my hair to be cut so that it looks like I have thin hair because I love having it thick. Is it worth getting it cut with shorter layers at the top? Will it work? Please help me. :D I wouldn't mind getting a hair cut seeing as it's been the same for a long time, lol, but the big question is whether it will be the way I wanted it too. I can't get my hair back once it is cut so I want to make sure :D

Yes, getting layers would help, but the layers alone wouldn't make it all big and thick-looking. You'd probably need to tease it as well. If you do decide to get it cut, get a lot of layers at the top, starting short, and gradually get longer as you go down.
