Hey, not an expert or aything just saying what i know :). Ive been through many hair problems + ive been through one exactly like this! One thing- do not just throw on a shop bought hair dye or your hair will dry out + end up breaking! the more blonde = the more ammonia which does kill your hair! two things you can do, either let your hair grow out by its self which means yeah you will have roots growing in all the time but its underneath so why care?! lol or you can go to the hairdresser and ask to get it chemically stripped which will take the darkness out your hair and you can get it dyed blonde straight on top :) but this does make your hair extremely dry so you will need to nourish + protect it very well if you do go for option 2. Hope this helps you! :D

when mine was blonde on top and close to black on the bottom I had to get a thin layer of the black bleached every time I got the rest of the blonde retouched. Eventually it'll get to where there's a small layer of the darker color, and then you'll have blonde hair again. Oh, if you do it all at once, your hair will be really damaged and it may melt.
