I\'m coloring my hair red...

Attached is the color I'm going for. Where my hair is dark, It doesn't take color well at all. I tried putting red highlites in a few weeks ago, and they didn't take.

So, as a precaution I'm going to prelighten.

How much should I prelighten my hair before coloring? I don't need to go full blonde, do you think that just a light brown would suffice? To minimize damage, if possible. My hair is currently dark brown box dye, though. :/ I had blonde for years, and just recently redyed it brown. So I a lighter metallic dye won't take over a darker one. :(, I will check out that shade of red though. Thanks!

also recently i added gold and red highlights to my hair but the red was dark and it blended with my hair color so i can only see them if i'm looking for them. it's not like it didn't take it just was similar shades in different colors
