It wont get rid of the roughness of the hair it will make it worse. Perming your hair is the only way to do this. And this damages hair more then anything you can do. Sorry.

The best thing for you to do is to put a hair mask on every week to condition well every time you shampoo to soften your hair also put on an oil before putting in large rolllers this will give you the style you are looking for.

I know I'm not much of a help with the permanent thing but I got a new hair straightener from Ulta thats white and black and its from hot tools. I'm in love! Since your hair is thin it will work really well. It is ceramic and has infared heat that makes ur hair actually softer and shinier! And yesterday I really went crazy seeing how curly/wavy I could get my super thick hair to be and it REALLY worked! That took me about 20 minutes to do but if your hair is thin I would say straightening and waving the ends of it would take a max of 5 mins a day. try it out! I don't know about you but theres a sale in ulta where I live that goes until sept 26th for 20% off all flat irons. Mine was $47

I have gotten the Permenant straighening done. I believe I did the Japanese version. It does make your hair smoother and really silky straight. I have eczema and it did not bother me a bit. I believe I had mine done in Japan because they use less chemical than the states.. but I believe now a days salons have that version here now. it took about 4 hours and I am not sure how much it is now. when I got it done i think i spent about $450. but it lasts for about 2 years. I thought it was well worth it. I have not done it again since.... but I do want too.

2. Liscio

3. Bio Ionics

okay I did not read your question clearly... you can't have permanent straight 'healthy' hair. because they do use chemicals... and chemicals damage hair at some point. so any processing will cause some form of damage. And you can't have side effects when dealing with hair. Side effects happen when you ingest something or when you take medication and has some adverse reaction.
