Of course invest in good quality equipment (cameras, lenses, printers, etc). I don't know much about photography per se, but as with any business, put your work out there by advertising on social networking sites or even better, create a website which will also serve as a virtual portfolio.. Be sure to put a logo on your photos, as they can easily be copied or stolen.

You're going to need some kind of understanding in Business to open one in general. You won't need to take college courses, necessarily, but you will need to do some kind of looking into the field in your area, look for an empty photography niche, and start your self off as well as you can by really promoting yourself. Be confident. Believe in yourself. Plan out business goals. Good luck~!

I'm a photographer myself, I do weddings. Megatron's tips were pretty good, but I'll add just one: make sure you make thousands and thousands of photos. You will possibly have to make jobs for free for your friends so people notice your work and you build a portfolio.

Oh, and don't try to rush things, because they can't be rushed. It will take a while until people start to see your work.

Well, one of my good friends and past teacher was in the photography business so I know a few tricks of the trade.
1) Make yourself a snazzy website that clearly states what types of photography you specialize in.
2) Create an account on different types of websites (i.e. twitter, deviantart, tumblr, ectetera)
3) Definitely get a DeviantArt. It will help you tremendously. Trust me(:
4) Try and display your artwork in as many places as you're able.

Good Luck(:
