Lipase Test – Its Meaning, Usage, Normal Range and Cost

Lipase is a
special enzyme produced by the pancreas that helps the intestines in the
breakdown of fats from the food consumed. The enzyme also aids in the movement
of cell nutrients and cell waste through the walls of the cells of the body. A
lipase test is performed to check the presence of this enzyme type in the human
system.

The test is
often ordered along with an amylase test which is used for the diagnosis of the
presence of a disease or condition in the pancreas. The two tests together, are
typically useful in the detection and monitoring of many kinds of specific
infections, diseases and conditions. Some of these are as follows:-

·
pancreatic cancer

·
Crohn’s disease

·
cystic fibrosis

·
celiac disease

·
acute pancreatitis wherein the pancreas suddenly swell up

·
chronic pancreatitis wherein the swelling of pancreas is recurrent in
nature

Why is a lipase test ordered?

As stated above,
a lipase test is recommended to an individual to check for the presence of any
of the above noted conditions. An increase in the level of lipase is an
indication of worsening of a disease present in the human system. Additionally,
it is also used for monitoring the effectiveness of an on-going treatment and
to make initial diagnoses as well. Some initial stage diagnoses include (the
reason behind):-

·
loss of appetite

·
weight loss

·
nausea with or without vomiting

·
severe pain in upper abdominal portion or back

·
fever

·
oily or fatty stools

How to Interpret Lipase Test Result

A lipase test means
measurement of the amount of lipase enzyme present in the bloodstream. The
results for this test are generally made available within 12 hours of blood
sample collection.

Lipase test
normal range value amid individuals below the age of 60 typically falls between
10 to 140 units per liter (U/L) or 0.17-2.3 microkatals/liter
(mckat/L)
. On the other hand, the normal range value for individuals
above the age of 60 years falls between 18-180 units per liter (U/L) or
0.30-3.0 mckat/L.

A higher value
is an indication of the prevalence of one or a combination of the below
mentioned diseases in the body:-

·
Pancreatic disease such as
pancreatitis

·
Pancreatic cancer

·
Gallbladder condition such as
gallstones or inflammation

·
A severe kidney disease

·
Bowel blockage or tissue death
in the intestines

·
Infection, inflammation or
presence of cancerous cells in the salivary gland

·
Peptic ulcer disease

·
Primary biliary cirrhosis
wherein severe damage is cause the liver

·
Drug or alcohol abuse

In particular,
decreased or lower levels of lipase in the body are an indication of the
existence of cystic fibrosis. A lipase test offers important health related
information and is recommended to be get done at least once in six months. The
lipase test cost is minimal and offered by almost all pathology labs and
diagnostic centres functioning in India.
