Preschool education Singapore refers to the teaching of kids between the ages of 3 years up to 5 years at the pre-primary level. This section of education precedes the compulsory primary school education.
For preschool education, Singapore is one of the best places to be. It is considered very important in the overall education of the child. The pattern of preschool education is to keep the education enjoyable while encouraging them to be lifelong learners.
There is stress in parents to keep the child well prepared around the end of K1 as the child has just one year before getting admissions to the primary school. While this is the general situation when we carried out a research by inquiring with groups of parents, we found out a number of things, they voiced their concerns regarding preschool education in Singapore.
Teachers’ quality needs to improve
Generally, teachers are paid poorly and it does not form a lucrative career for many skilled teachers to teach at the preschool level. Preschool teachers’ job is physically and mentally tiring. To attract better candidates for teachers including graduates, they must be paid better salaries. Further, they are required to be trained along with the job. There is very little or no such arrangement at present.
Singapore preschools are pretty expensive
Preschool education in Singapore is quite expensive. The prices range from $250 per month to around $2000 per month. In fact, it is more expensive than the undergraduate program for most courses. In fact, this wide range of fees does not ensure improved teacher to child ratio or enhanced facilities of an improved curriculum. Parents desire that the government introduce a subsidy program to assist payment of fees.
Location of schools and lesser seats vis-à-vis requirements
The number of seats in better schools is very less compared to the kids seeking admission for preschool education Singapore. At some places, there is a waiting list in thousands. The students have to take admission in places far from their resident places. This gives great stress and anxiety especially to working parents for leaving and collecting the child back.
Singapore is the most developed country in South-East Asia. It has a good preschool education system. There is a number of quality and cost based issues which need to be improved in the preschool education Singapore. Nothing can be said to be of perfect quality. It is a moving and forever improvement process. We hope that Singapore addresses these concerns and much more to provide enhanced preschool facilities for its newer generation.
