Decorating Your Wedding On a Budget

Many people get so carried away with the idea that their wedding day has to be absolutely perfect, they get scared of the word ‘budget’. There may be certain things you don’t want to skimp on, like the catering and the venue – though there are many reasonably priced reception venues in Melbourne available – but your decorations are so easy to save on without sacrificing on style.

Using light

Fairy lights are inexpensive yet can be so effective, instantly transforming a space with the flick of a switch. A 25-metre string of lights will only set you back about $12 at one of the big discount department stores, and a few metres will go miles in terms of creating ambience at your Melbourne reception venue.

Another super-cheap lighting option is the classic candle. Pair them with pretty tea light holders (available at bargain-basement prices at discount stores) for a beautiful effect that suits so many different aesthetics.

Make Smart Substitutions

Many reception venues in Melbourne will come with certain inbuilt decorative features, but there are many ways you can substitute other decorations with cheaper alternatives. For example, instead of renting costly seat covers, you could tie beautiful ribbons around your seats. And instead of expensive and elaborate flower arrangements, you could go to the market yourself and pick fresh bunches of your favourites.

Another great idea is to replace overpriced centrepieces with something like elegant white helium balloons, hanging paper garlands, or fresh bunches of flowers in rustic milk jugs. Ferns and big leafy greenery can also be a good way to fill space in a gorgeous way.

And finally, don’t be afraid to get your friends in on the decoration action. Making some gorgeous pieces together over a few glasses of champagne is a really fun way to get excited about the special day.

Go Rustic Over Refined

Rustic weddings continue to gain popularity – not just because they look beautiful, but because the more relaxed vibe often means that everyone has a better time! This aesthetic also lets you be a bit more relaxed about your decorations.

For example, there are plenty of reception venues in Melbourne with gorgeous gardens – so instead of having a formal sit-down dinner, why not have a picnic?  You can use cushions, low-sitting tables, and big baskets of food and wine to create a laidback affair under the open night sky. Or embrace a rural look at your outdoor reception venue with uncovered timber tables and chairs, simple table settings, and unfussy displays. For example, wine barrels decorated with colourful bouquets, burlap banners, potted plants, and old wooden ladders decked out with garlands and candles in jars.

Remember, a wedding is not a competition to spend as much money as possible. There really is no shame in cutting costs to make more wiggle room for those things you simply don’t want to compromise on. And with some reception venues in Melbourne offering such good prices for their spaces, you could be looking at a much cheaper day than you ever anticipated!
