Quick and Easy Waterfall Braids for Long Hair Tutorial

Braids are a style nearly as timeless as tresses themselves. They are water to the world of hair—quite literally in some cases. The waterfall braid is an elegant style that many brides choose for their special day. It allows hair to bounce gracefully along their shoulders, showing off a wrap-around braid as a natural accessory. You’ll want to try this style because, while elegant, it’s easy! Below is a quick and easy tutorial on how to waterfall braid. With 10 simple steps, you’ll complete a showstopper style in no time.

-    long hair

-    hairspray (optional)

-    2 bobby pins

-    curlers or curling iron (optional)

-    comb

Step 1: Prepare hair for the waterfall braid by combing a part on the right side of head. The part should stop near the middle of the head. Note: You can curl with a curling iron or by leaving in curlers for a while before moving on to the next step. If you plan ahead, overnight curls can work too!

Step 2: Take one hair section from front right side of head (this should be the heavier side) and take another section left of the first one. Place the right section under the left one.

Step 3: Take another section of hair from above the first two and allow to “waterfall” over the first section taken.

Step 4: Now take the second section you started with in Step 2 and pull over the waterfall.

Step 5: While still holding the right section from Step 2 with your right hand and the left section from that same step in your left hand, take another section from the top of the head and let waterfall over the section in your left hand.

Step 6: Repeat this process until you have enough desired waterfalls. Note: You can also repeat the process on the other side of the head before the next step. See to see how this would look).

Step 7: Secure the ends by crossing two bobby pins so the braid doesn’t unravel. Note: You can also make a standard three-strand braid from the ends before pinning so the style is extra-secure.

Step 8: Make sure your elegantly curled, straight and silky, or slightly kinky hair covers the pins.

Step 9: Loosen the braids a bit so the style appears to have more body (and does not look like a French braid).

Step 10: Spray with hairspray to set the style in stone before the style sets the tone. Now you’re ready to walk with refreshing little waterfalls wherever you go!

Whether for special occasions such as weddings or simply for fun, the waterfall braid is a winning style. For examples of how wedding-worthy waterfall braids look, visit You can also check out to view a quick waterfall braid tutorial video. Happy braiding!
