Event coverage: Event Coverage: Street Fashion Week Spring 2018

My experience at Street Fashion Week during LA Fashion Week

By: Yveneka Lestin

I recently attended a New York based fashion production, Street Fashion Week during LA Fashion Week. A friend of mine was raving about this cool new show that services emerging designers. She shared photos from her New York Fashion Week experience with me and I was immediately convinced that I had to witness the creative visual experience known as Street Fashion Week for myself.

On March 17th, I attended Street Fashion Week during LA Fashion Week.

Street Fashion Week is a fashion show for the people. While it maintains exclusivity as evident in the great networking opportunity presented, you don't get that elitist feeling that normal fashion shows leave you with.

For the installment of the show I attended, they chose to take on the challenge of being the world first ever fashion show on a soccer field.  I have to give Street Fashion Week kudos for creativity. A challenge it definitely was but all the same it is refreshing to see the creativity behind this brand. I mean who does that? Fashion Show on a soccer field? Street Fashion Week does.

The FW2018 runway event will be headlined by Project Runway's David Giampiccolo, as he returns to the Street Fashion Week runway since his exit from the hit Bravo show. Also included in the lineup is emerging designer and LA based Deviante Lavie, Raw Hollywood, and Philly based Majeeda among others.

It's clear this is a promising production. I can see some challenges in their business model. By claiming to be the most affordable platform offering emerging designers the opportunity to present without breaking the bank, they obviously are faced with the challenge of needing to get real creative to cover production costs. If they can strengthen their infrastructure to align with partners and sponsors who seek out opportunities to support creatives as is mentioned in their mission statement, then I feel like they would stand a chance to own this space over the next few years as Streetwear is thriving.   Overall Street Fashion Week brought creativity to LA Fashion Week. At least they are stepping out of the box and taking risks
