Changing Your Diet to Clean Eating

My husband and I were eating clean even when there wasn’t a name for it.  Our diet focused on clean protein such as fish and chicken and a healthy dose of vegetables.  We’ve just always eaten that way.  Then he developed some stomach issues that required surgery.

So, we consciously decided to implement new habits and changed our diet.   While we ate a truly nutritious diet, it didn’t truly get clean until we moved out of the country.  Suddenly, we noticed that things that gave us problems in the past, no longer did.  There are several reasons for this.  While we considered our diet to be “clean”, it was not truly “clean”.

While we never ate fast food or at quick service restaurants, we ate out a lot and had a packaged items at home.  We didn’t buy organic produce.  Still, we lived what we considered to be a truly clean diet.

What we have learned since moving out the country is that while we thought that we were eating lots of vegetables and clean proteins, there was still a lot of “stuff” in our food. Jarred sauces and packaged foods had preservatives, flavor enhancers and colorings that we were not taking into account.  Now, the food we buy is just food.  No additional additives, colorings or dyes.  In fact, the eggs we buy are most likely from neighborhood producers.

The other addition that our level of exercise increased substantially.  While we had been walking a mile in the gym and then working out several times a week with a trainer, we now are walking approximately 3-5 miles each day…no gym required.  This has resulted in clearer skin, better muscle tone and lower weight.  In fact, now, we are eating to maintain weight and energy levels.

So, can you eat a truly clean diet without moving out of the country?  Absolutely!  The article, ‘Everything You Need to Know About Clean Eating’, provides a great overview of this healthy perspective on eating.  When you are planning your meals for the week, look for clean proteins and whole foods.

Believe it or not, we’ve learned that inner beauty and outer beauty involves being conscious of how you tend to eat so that you can make small modifications as needed.  Eating cleanly is not about denying yourself anything but rather looking at food differently.  It opens you to explore new options that you may not have previously considered.  Yes, you will be cooking more but as you become adjusted to a new outlook, you will find that you still have convenient meals and snacks on hand.

For instance, you may find yourself snacking on whole nuts and fruit as opposed to packaged items.  When you are making sauce, make a large batch so that you always have a quick meal when you need it.

Eating right is part of the equation, exercise is the other.  When you are running out to take care of a small task, if you have the option, walk.  If you change your perception of food and nutrition, consider other slight modifications that will give you benefits in the long run.  Walking, even for short distances, is healthy and free.

Changing your views about food, meal planning and your lifestyle can feel like a big change.  But I’m here to tell you that you can eat cleanly even if you don’t move to another country.  It’s about being fully conscious of how and what you eat.  You’ll feel better in the long run for making even small changes!
