Breast Augmentation – the 4 S’s You Must Know

Breast
Augmentation – the 4 S’s You Must Know

It is surprising to know that breast
augmentation
has been practice for half a century now; however, it still
remains the most popular cosmetic procedure in the US. By 2014, there were
close to 300,000 breast augmentation procedures performed as per the American
Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

As the number of surgeries still keep growing, the
technology and technique continues to advance as well leaving patients
confused. Here are the 4 S’s of breast augmentation to help you make an
informed choice:

1.    Saline
Vs. Silicone Implants

There have been many exhilarating
advancements in implants, these are in relation to the profile, size,
composition and the texture of the breast implants.

The days of the first generation implants
are long gone and today the headline grabbers are exciting options that have
been tested for both efficiency as well as safety.

Majority of women choose silicone breast
implants over their saline counterparts. The benefits of silicone implants are
many including a more natural feel, soft and light as well as offer the new
cohesive gel or ‘gummy bear’ option. The rate of rippling and rupture is also
lesser with them, however, they are more costly than the saline implants.

For those who look for a cheaper option
and a smaller incision, saline is a great alternative. Ultimately, it is your
decision so it is imperative that you are comfortable with your choice.

2.    The
Type Of Incision

Even though breast augmentation is such a
popular surgery today, most patients still like to keep their decision to have
one private. This makes them concerned about the location as well as the size
of the incision.

With advancements in the techniques of
breast surgery and options like the Keller Funnel, the appearance of scars has
been reduced drastically. There are several options for the types of incisions
during breast augmentation, most surgeons prefer peri-areolar (around the
areola), inframammary (under the breast crease) and transaxillary (under
armpit).

You should discuss with your surgeon the
type of incision that will suit you best for your body type, lifestyle and the
implant you selected.

3.    Size
of Implant

Undoubtedly the most anxious moment for
breast augmentation patients is when they are trying to determine the size of
the implants.

Most women are concerned about looking too
big and yet wanting to look like they had something done. Another oft repeated
comment is that a friend had 300cc implants and she looks gorgeous…I want the
same. It is important for women to understand their own body type and how the
size of an implant is determined.

During your consultation, your surgeon
must take measurements to determine the most appropriate implant size for you
and also to offer you a method to be able to visualize the results. Imaging
technology is used often and so are implant sizers – either way you must be an
active participant while making the size choice.

4.    Selecting
Your Surgeon

The last but not the least S during your
breast augmentation choices is choosing a surgeon for your procedure.

Ensure that your surgeon is board certified (American Board Of Medical
Specialties or ABMS) in plastic surgery field. He or she must also be a member
of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
