Your Guide to a Complete Skin Detox After the Holidays

The Christmas cheer is gone already, along with its abundance of food, drinks and fun we all made sure to enjoy. The combination of the dry winter air, foods and alcohol we indulged in and maybe a slack in our skincare routine means we’re most likely seeing adverse effects on our skin.

If you entered 2017 with dull, dehydrated skin, it’s time to consider a skin detox. You don’t need to do any juicing, just use the right skincare products with the right routines consistently.

1. Give your skin some breathing space

Your skin needs to rest from the overdose of makeup, irritating dry air and every other not-skin-friendly condition it’s been exposed to. You can still wear makeup, but stay away from creamy foundations and concealers that will block your pores. Do this until your skin is back to a healthy state.

2. Exfoliate

The dead skin cells and build up under your pores need to go. Use a gentle face exfoliator for your face and a body scrub or body brush for the rest of your body. Doing this would help bring back soft and glowing skin. Exfoliate your skin twice in a week for better and quicker results.

3. Use peels

Facial peels are a good way to bring life back into your skin, leaving you with balanced, radiant skin and a healthy glow. If you’re experienced with peels, just jump back in with your normal routine. If you’re new to this skincare product, we recommend using a fruit based at-home facial peel. To start with, use the peels just once in a week.

4. Steam your face

Steaming your face comes with a lot of benefits. It helps to open up the pores so that dirt and oils can be removed more easily. Open pores also means that your skincare products can penetrate deeper for better effect. A post steam glow is also amazing as it leaves your skin looking healthy and radiant.

5. Invest in masks

Masks are an amazing at home skincare treatment for your skin. There are different masks for different skin issues. There are masks to help with oil balance, hydrating masks, detoxifying masks and many more. You also have the option of multi masking if different parts of your skin need different types of mask care.

6. Moisturize

Through all your skincare routines, never forget to moisturize. Moisturization is needed to lock in hydration to your skin. If you don’t do this, your skin will be left super dry with no glow to it. Moisturizing especially after an intense skincare routine also helps to close up your pores, preventing dirt or other particles that could cause skin issues, from entering. There are different moisturizer options and you can decide to use lotions, creams or oils. When choosing a moisturizer, make sure that whichever one you choose is designed specifically for your skin type.

7. Diet

You may not like it but for good results, you need to take care of the inside along with the outside. During your skin detox, stay away from foods with sugar, diary and especially coffee. Switch out your sugar drinks and coffee with water. This is very important especially if you consumed a lot of alcohol during the holidays. Drink lots of water daily, your skin cells need it to stay healthy. Water also helps to flush out toxins from your body, giving your insides a detox too.

8. Your Smile

Don’t forget about your teeth, they may not be skin but they are a major part of your facial make up so give your pearly whites some extra love after all the sugar, chocolate and red wine. Get them professional cleaned, invest in a teeth whitening kit and watch your smile light up your face!

Skin recovery isn’t a one day process, but over time, you will begin to see results. Make sure you are consistent with your skincare routine and eat healthy all the time.
