Why More Women are Getting Into Men's Games Like Poker

There is no denying that the tide has been turning in the world of gambling as of late, and more women have entered the competitive gambling scene than ever before. Many factors can be attributed to the recent rise of women in online and offline gambling, which will be addressed in this piece.

The Rise of Online Gaming

One of the many reasons why there has been a recent augmentation of the number of women participating in professional poker tournaments and world poker competitions is the rise of online poker. Annette Obrestad, who is covered in this article by 888poker, actually started playing online before she became the youngest player in the history of the WSOPE to win the tournament.

Brick and mortar casinos can be a very hostile environment for many women, and the chauvinistic attitudes that are portrayed in many movies by casino players are not that far from the truth in many ways. While many professional poker players such as Phil Ivey had their start in illegal backroom poker games, these environments may be more difficult to access and hostile to women.

Online gaming offers a safe environment for players to practice their skills without being judged or bothered. This is why women represent the fastest growing segment in the world of online poker and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

Rise in Popularity Not Limited to Online Gaming

However, while women are being represented in larger numbers when it comes to online gambling, brick and mortar casinos are also seeing a spike in female players. Research shows that women tend to gravitate towards games such as craps, roulette and slots while men tend to head straight to the blackjack and poker tables. However, more and more women are showing an interest in live poker than ever before and are taking advantage of the prejudice against female poker players to take in big bucks at cash games.

Women and Social Casino Gaming

Social casinos are a new entry in the online gaming industry. Social casino gaming allows users to play using virtual chips and cash prizes are rarely given. The whole focus of the gaming experience is to simply enjoy the game and share results with friends. It also allows users to use their social media account in conjunction with the games to share results or engage with their social circle.

It has been estimated that over a third of social casino players are women and the numbers keep increasing. As a matter of fact, the number of women playing social casino games increased by 22% from 2012 to 2013. This has prompted many gaming companies to give more attention to the market and there are currently more than 100 startups dedicated to social casino gaming alone.

There is no denying that women will continue to make their presence felt online and offline in the world of gaming and that more female poker players will certainly rise to prominence in the coming years. The advent of online gaming has opened the doors to many players who would've been deterred by a more traditional casino environment. It also allows new players to enjoy the game from the comfort of their home, far away from judgement and the unwelcoming and sometimes predatory nature of casinos.
