In theory, getting ready for a wedding should not be all that difficult. You know that when your big day comes, the most important thing is…that you actually get married. How hard can that be? If you're having a simple wedding (think justice of the peace in a courthouse), then your wedding planning checklist may not be all that complicated. But if you, like many engaged couples out there, are booking a venue for your wedding, hiring a photographer, ordering invitations, inviting several guests, catering your reception, and planning on taking a honeymoon, then you probably realize that you have a lot of things that need to be done, and a lot of deadlines for when these things need to be finished by.
There are a few ways to go about managing your wedding checklist. One option is to keep track of your checklist the old-fashioned way – good old pencil and paper. Sure, you can use sticky notes as reminders to yourself and erase to-do's that are no longer relevant. If you go this route, let's just hope that you don't spill coffee on your list, or even worse, lose your list!
Another option is to create a spreadsheet on your computer. Some clear advantages of a spreadsheet over paper is that you can easily edit your electronic spreadsheet. However, portability is a disadvantage to using a spreadsheet. If you've saved the list on your computer's hard drive, then you need to have access to your computer to be able update your checklist.Let's also hope that you don't spill coffee on your computer! Cloud storage and file-sharing services are an option for accessing your list while away from your home computer. But you may experience difficulty navigating and editing multiple rows and columns of your spreadsheet from your mobile device.
You've likely heard the phrase, "there's an app for that." Well, there's a reason that this phrase is so popular, and that's because software applications or "apps" tend to make our lives easier. This is certainly true when it comes to getting ready for your wedding. An app to manage your wedding checklist means that you can update your to-do list from anywhere that you have internet access, which is nearly everywhere these days. You get the best of both worlds: it's portable, it's in an electronic format, and it's easily editable. Furthermore, an app prioritizes your tasks for you – you can easily track what's overdue, upcoming, and what has been completed.
You can view all of your wedding-related tasks in one location and view at-a-glance reminders to stay on top of things. You can alter deadlines with a few mouse clicks if you're on your computer, or with a few finger swipes if you're on your mobile device. Your checklist of to-do's is tied to meaningful dates that are tailored to your wedding day. Wouldn't it be more helpful to see that you need to send your invitations on March 15th, instead of the generic checklist item "send invitations 6-8 weeks before your wedding"? Let the app figure out the exact date for you, you already have your hands full with other tasks.
Some of the more sophisticated apps even allow you to invite multiple users so you can recruit family and friends to help you cross off items from your list – share the workload! You're better of choosing an app where your data are password-protected. You can relax knowing that you can keep planning while on the go and that your information is safe as you plan for your big day.
Are you using an app to manage your wedding checklist? Does it help you stay organized? We'd love to hear what event planning apps are out there right now.
