In the present world of digitalization sharing personal information with others have become very easy, the more the person is unsecured regarding his personal information the more he has the chance to get affected by identity theft.
The Federal Trade Commission has published a report in 2009 that 13.9 million Americans had faced the problem of their identity stolen and the amount of money they lost is huge. And according to them one of among 20 customers will lose their identity this year. Most disturbing thing is the victim of identity theft is also the dead ones. The criminals used their personal information to perform their needs.
Impacts of identity theft on the victim;
The criminals usually target sensitive data of the victims, like Social Security Number, credit and debit account numbers, passwords, email-ids, driving license etc for performing criminal deeds.
The situation gets worse for college students, who tends to join a reputed university with a huge amount of educational loan and for some unfortunate reasons falls prey to those criminals.
Imagine the situation of students when they realize that they not only have to pay back their education loan with interest but also thousands of dollars of unauthorized debt because they have become the victim.
But the most distressed payment that the victim has to pay is the time to realize that his identity has been stolen. It sometimes take a lot of time to realize, that within that time many things can go beyond your control. Identity theft can result in wrecked credit card rating, with dangerous criminal records, joblessness, and needless to mention financial problems.
Now if someone wants to clean the mess, it will take days to deal with these kind of issues as it will damage your reputation in the society. Becoming an identity theft will be the last thing that anyone can wish to be as it takes years to cope up with the loss.
And the college students are easy victims because at this age they tend to meet more people with zero orthodoxy. Also the excessive personal posts in social media make the situation more vulnerable for them and when they realize, it was too late. The college goers are also very reckless in nature; they easily give credit cards to someone for loan. They think very little before sharing information with people and keeping their secrets intact and that’s why identity theft while in college is common for students.
If you really want to get an umbrella of protection from this deadly crime then immediately identify and stop your actions that lead you to share your personal information with some unknown people. Exercise as much as precaution you can to keep you safe.
