Is Sleeping in Your Bra Bad for Your Health?

There
are a lot of myths about the adverse effects of wearing a bra during sleep. Some
recommend sleeping in a bra, while others are categorically against sleeping in
a bra. This kind of difference in opinion by ‘experts’ is the reason this
debate is still going on, despite there being no clear consensus.

It
all comes down to one simple question, why do you wear a bra? Besides push-up
bras and other ‘special’ bra types, one of the main reasons why any woman would
put on a bra is because they feel more comfortable in it. If that’s the case
for you then you can go ahead and sleep in your bra, because it is not bad for
you. Many think that there is no evidence whatsoever that a bra is harmful to a
woman’s health, even if they go to sleep in them.

Can Wearing a Bra Cause Breast Cancer?

Those
who advise against wearing a bra in your sleep argue that it may cause cancer,
but these arguments are not supported by any evidence. A case study was
conducted back in 2014 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in
Seattle. The researchers did not find any correlation between the wearing of a
bra and the likelihood of acquiring breast
cancer
. The study also showed no correlation between breast cancer and the
size of the bra, whether fitting of tight, if they slept in it or not, how
often the women wore a bra, and even if it had an underwire. This study clearly
indicated that the cancer theory was completely false and was not based in
fact.

So,
what about those who promote bra-wearing, any truth to that? Again, the sagging
of the breasts can’t be helped by even the tightest bra, but this effect is
caused by fat tissue replacing breast tissue with age. It is inevitable, and
the bra won’t help prevent the sagging of the breasts.

What's the Catch?

We
now already know that wearing a bra while sleeping is not necessarily bad for
your health, but there’s always a catch. The same bra you wear during the day
may not be the best while you’re sleeping. For example, an underwire bra may be
great because it provides extra support, but this same underwire can dig into
your breasts at night. While everyone turns in their sleep, you’re more likely
to lie in one position for a long time, and the bra can cause breast irritation.

What Does All This Mean?

After
looking at the evidence, or lack thereof, it’s clear that a bra is not bad for
you, but you still need to be careful when picking one if you’re going to be
wearing it while sleeping. Choose a bra that is comfortable – not too tight or
a bra with parts that may dig into your breasts. The material is also crucial
because the nipples are sensitive and a rough material can cause irritation.
Other than that, you shouldn’t even think twice before going to sleep before
removing your bra. Some camisoles and pajama tops come with a build in bra. So,
these may be a good option for you instead of wearing a real bra while
sleeping.

However,
keep in mind that it is never a good idea to wear a tight fitting bra or a bra
that does not fit properly, not just while sleeping but also during the day.
Whenever you decide to wear a bra, even if you feel comfortable wearing a bra
24/7 make sure to wear the right size. If you have difficulties finding the
right size and shape of your bra, you can always visit specialty bra shops or
even department stores where you can get all the help and tips how to choose a
bra and which size and bra type suits you better.

If
you decide to sleep braless too, it’s ok as long as you are comfortable.
