Tamil Wedding Traditions & Customs in India

The wedding is a joyous affair in itself as well as a convention that represents the abundance of the Indian culture of sacredness, love, and dedication. India is a nation of different dialects and traditions, where "marriage" remains as one of the most significant customs of all. As far as wedding traditions and customs are concerned, India stands out in the world.

Tamil wedding symbolizes a custom that shows the purity of the Tamil community. In Tamil community, the wedding ceremony is an occasion of joy and celebrations with the near and dear ones. The Tamil wedding ceremonies are performed in Hindu Vedic style. The Tamil lady of the hour and the lucky man look fantastic on their big day wearing costly wedding dresses.

On this big day, a range of rituals takes place which begins early in the morning with 'Mangal Snaanam' where the bride and the groom take a holy bath for refinement. This is trailed by Kashi yatra where the groom puts himself on a show to leave for 'Kashi Yatra' to surrender himself to god. The young lady's dad then interrupts and prevents him from leaving and appeals him to acquire his little girl as his life accomplice by wedding her. Then the man of the hour returns back and enters the wedding hall.

After that, The lady of the hour and the man of the hour exchanges garlands with each other. This is followed by another ceremony known as Oonjal where the Tamil lady of the hour and Tamil groom are made to sit on a swing and the wedded females offer milk and banana pieces to them. They circle rice balls around the couple, which is to keep the insidious powers far from the couple. At this moment, aarti is also completed by the ladies in the family. Soon after this, there is Gauri Pooja in which the lady of the hour pays secretly to Gauri Amma. Kanyadaan is then performed by the guardians of the lady of the hour where the mother of the bride applies kajal in groom's eyes and the lady's dad washes groom's feet with water and milk as he is considered as an incarnation of the lord Vishnu.
