Family Portraits Can Build Self-Esteem in Your Child

Most parents and photographers rarely think of one of the most powerful aspects of having family photos taking. Having a family portrait can actually help raise your children with more confidence in their abilities and have a higher sense of self-worth. You should never underestimate the importance of showcasing your family as a unit. Families are made up of a number of different ways, and circumstances vary from one household to the next. The most important thing that you can do is to ensure that you are providing family photos. These photos will show your children that they are an important and vital part of the family unit, no matter how your family is made up.

A photographer gets paid in order to create and make an image that shows children as safe and protected. Kids look at these photographs and get it. They feel safe and protected. Many mental health counseling services use family photos in their therapy sessions. Pictures provide children with a way to see how they fit into the puzzle. They are able to look at the picture and see where the piece that is them of the bigger puzzle fits in with the other pieces of the family puzzle. Pictures also provide children with the opportunity to learn about their family’s unique story. When they see a family photo that they are a part of, they realize that they not only come from this family but belong to them as well.

Pictures are being produced more and more on some type of digital form. However, some professionals say that these photos do not provide the same effects on a child’s self-esteem as having a professionally completed portrait hanging on the wall. When you have the portrait on the wall, it is providing reinforcements of the message that the child belongs to the family and is safe at home every time they walk by the picture. More than likely, they are going to see it every single day. This can provide reassurance for the child that they are not only safe but that they are loved.

Some professionals compare touching a printed photograph to touching a book when you read the pages. It provides stimulation to the brain and reinforces the message through providing the brain with a sensory type of experience. The sensory part is diminished when you are looking at a digital photo because you are not touching the image itself. Other professionals have stated that when you display your photos in the home prominently, it tells others that the individuals in the home matter to one another and honor all of the memories that they have shared together. You should consider having a family photo placed in your child’s bedroom as well so that they can always know that they are loved and safe.
