The idea that food can help you lose weight might seem odd, but it’s true. Choosing the right foods can help you reduce your overall calorie intake, feel fuller longer and even rev up your metabolism. Weight loss is hard, so why not give yourself the best chance possible? Whether you’re new to eating healthy or just need a few tips to improve your diet, learning about these nutrient-rich foods will help.

1. Green Tea

There’s nothing like a hot cup of tea. If you’ve never tried the green variety, now is the time to start. If you’re already a big fan of green tea, here are a few reasons to feel better about your daily habit.

Research has shown that the caffeine and antioxidants in green tea can turbo charge your metabolism. One study found that those who regularly drink green tea lost more weight over a 12-week period than those who did not. You don’t have to drink a lot, either. The research suggests that two to three cups a day is more than enough. Limit your tea consumption to the first half of the day to avoid sleep problems due to the caffeine.

2. Spinach and Other Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are one of the most amazing foods you can add to your diet. Spinach is packed with nutrients like folate, antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. Cooking the greens will make it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients, so add your greens to vegetable stir fry, soups and other dishes. You can also blend the leaves with your favorite fruits and berries to make a delicious green smoothie.

Other healthy greens aside from spinach include kale, mustard greens, collard greens and swiss chard.

3. Oily Fish

If you’re not a vegetarian, fish is a tasty and healthy option to include in your diet. Salmon is an excellent choice. It’s packed with protein and healthy fats, and it makes a great option for a post-workout snack. Other oily varieties of fish, such as sardines and mackerel, are also ideal.

4. Hot Peppers

Do you love spicy food? If so, you’re in luck! Spicy peppers contain capsaicin, a substance that has been shown to help your body burn more fat. 5. Vinegar

Vinegar can be taken as a supplement or used in foods. Studies show that apple cider vinegar can help balance blood sugar and help you feel full after a meal. If you don’t like drinking it straight, you can add a spoonful to a glass of water. You can also try mixing it with olive oil, garlic and herbs for a refreshing salad dressing.

6. Black Beans

These beans are commonly found in Mexican dishes, but you can get creative and cook with them any way you choose. They contain the protein and fiber you need to feel full and satisfied after eating.

Adding these foods to your diet won’t make you lose weight overnight. Weight loss always takes consistent effort. On top of adding these healthy foods, consider cutting back on sweets, processed flours and soda. Be as active as you can, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t hit the gym on a regular basis.
