What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty in Latham, NY is a cosmetic surgery procedure which is performed to change the appearance of the female genitals. Usually, women undergo labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons since some women feel their vaginal lips must look a certain way. It is natural that the labia minora looks different for every woman with skin folds around the opening of the vagina.
What is the labiaplasty procedure?
A plastic surgeon or gynecologist performs this procedure where the vaginal lips are either shortened or reshaped. Your doctor will use either a scalpel, laser or specialized scissors to cut off the excessive tissue and then dissolvable sutures are used on the edges. The labia majora can be reduced with surgery or liposuction if so required. Some women also get an additional procedure at this time called hoodectomy which involves the clitoris being exposed for increased sexual stimulation.
The procedure lasts for about an hour or two and it is carried out under general or local anesthesia in combination with sedation.
Are you a good candidate for labiaplasty?
Some women develop changes in the labia, such as tears post childbirth, which makes them an ideal candidate for it. If you feel any discomfort when you sit, exercise or have sex, you will benefit from labiaplasty as well. Even though cosmetic surgeons stress that there is no specific shape for the female genitals, several women are dissatisfied with their labia minora or majora being large or irregular. Labiaplasty helps these women achieve the desired shape and size.
What will be the recovery?
Post your labiaplasty surgery, you must abstain from intercourse for a month. Tenderness and swelling may remain for a few week’s time, there may also be some bruising on and around the labia.
Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication as well as antibiotics to keep infection at bay. You must avoid any strenuous exercises for the first 3 weeks. Tampons should also be avoided for 10 days post your surgery but you will be required to wear pads for a week due to the post-surgical bleeding.
What will be the results?
Since the female genitalia isn’t the same for every woman, labiaplasty results will also differ as per the desires. Once the healing is complete in 6 to 8 weeks, your final results will gradually be visible in the following 3 to 4 months. Whatever your reason is for opting for labiaplasty, it certainly helps women regain their self-confidence with increased sexual experience and physical comfort.
