Different conditions that can be treated with liposuction

Liposuction in Birmingham is used mostly to treat the inner knees, chest, buttocks, back and abdomen.  Other areas which can be treated are upper arms, thighs, neckline, flanks and hips.  The best candidates for a liposuction are those who have good elasticity and skin tone since the skin can easily mold well to the new contours. When the skin has no elasticity, it may look loose after the procedure.

Patients should be in good health and not suffering from diabetes, coronary artery disease or poor circulation. You should also be more than 18 years old to undergo the procedure.

Sometimes a liposuction can be used for treating some health conditions:

  • Lymphedema is a chronic condition where fluids collect within the tissues and they lead to edema. This edema normally takes place in the legs or arms. A liposuction treatment can be used to reduce pain, discomfort and swelling.

  • Gynecomastia is when fat accumulates under man’s breast.

  • Lipodystrophy syndrome is when fat cells accumulate at one part of the body and is not found anywhere else. Liposuction is used to improve the appearance of the patient and it provides body fat distribution that looks more natural.

  • Too much weight loss for an obese person also requires aid from procedures like liposuction. When morbidly obese patients lose over 40 percent of BMI, too much skin or abnormalities can be treated with a liposuction.

  • Lipomas is a benign tumor made by fatty cells which can be treated with liposuction.

Before undergoing liposuction, the doctor will want to perform some tests to see if the patient is fit for the surgery.

The doctor may recommend:

  • To stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin for 2 weeks before the surgery

  • To stop taking contraceptive pills

  • To take iron supplements to patients who suffer from anemia

Before the operation, the doctor will use general anesthesia to put the patient into complete sleep. Liposuction lasts between one to four hours. If the liposuction is done on a small area then a local anesthesia will be used instead.
