Should I Start Using a Workout Log?

Journaling
your workouts is more than just a number of sets, reps, and weights. It can be
expanded to include how you felt that day, how your lifestyle choices
influenced your day, and even where you stand in relation to your goals.

There
are a metric ton of reasons to start keeping a workout journal, from keeping
you motivated, to helping you be more consistent, to even increasing
self-awareness so that you better understand yourself and your physical
performance.

Here
are some frequently asked questions in regards to my favorite tool for better
performance in the gym, the workout
journal
.

How many details should I use?

Each
athlete and gymgoer is different. At the end of the day, you want enough
information so that you are able to extract patterns, connections and the
motivation to help you show up again tomorrow, but not so much detail that it
is impossible to sustain.

When should I write things out in my
workout journal?

As
soon as you can. The name of the game with journaling your workouts, whether
it’s a session in the gym, doing laps in the pool, or going for a long morning
run, is accuracy! Having an accurate performance history is key in helping you
design a program for improvement and progression.

Does journaling my workout have any
other psychological benefits?

Absolutely!
The workout journal can provide you a platform to help vent about your workouts
and also the rest of your life. If you have an upcoming competition or race,
for instance, you can use it to detail and lay bare your self-doubt, concerns
and anxiety ahead of time and shine a light on it. A workout journal can act as
a therapeutic tool.

Will journaling my workouts help me
get stronger and fitter?

The
main driver of results, at the end of the day, regardless of what your goals
are, from a gym newbie to an Olympic level athlete, is consistency. Keeping a
regular workout journal will help you do this by encouraging you to be more
accountable to your workouts, help you finish the workouts that you set out to
do, and better help you plan out your workouts and training. Combined, these
things will absolutely help you get stronger and fitter.

Do I have to get an app or should I
use a regular old notebook?

Another
huge benefit of the workout journal is that not only can you customize it
according to your goals and aspirations in the gym, but you can also choose the
format that you use. There is no shortage of mobile apps and web-based apps
that are designed specifically for this purpose. You can also get a
template-designed workout journal, or go old school and get a blank moleskin.
Whatever works best for you, roll with it!

The
workout journal is one of those workout tools that is underused, and
underappreciated. The benefits of logging your workouts can better power
workouts. If you want more consistent sessions in the gym, if you want faster
results, and if you want the therapeutic benefits and the increased
self-awareness that comes along with journaling your workouts, than pick up a
log book and start writing them out today.
