Why Medical Marijuana should be legal for medical reasons?

Marijuana has always been a peculiar plant from the Cannabis genus. It owes its popularity to numerous spheres of human activity. In some parts of the world Cannabis plants are grown and used for food, fuel, building material, and of course, for its psychoactive properties.

Although Cannabis has a long history of cultivation, people just recently started to realize its strong potential for treating serious health conditions.Marijuana is the whole, unprocessed plant or its extracts and is currently used to treat certain medical conditions on a predominantly trial basis.

There’san ongoing debate on whether or not marijuana usage for medical reasons should be legal. According to an article on, Ohio is the latest state to legalize medical marijuana starting on September 8th, 2018, and it’s already working on increasing the number of medical marijuana dispensaries.

As with any other controversial topic, there are arguments to support both sides. These are the top ten conditions that will benefit from marijuana treatment.

1. Glaucoma treatment

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the eye. It is caused by increased eye pressure, which presses the eyeball, the optic nerve that connects the eyeball, and the brain vision center. This condition can lead to permanent loss of vision in severe cases. Studies have shown that marijuana lowers eyeball pressure, preventing the risk of blindness.

2. AIDS symptoms treatment

Since AIDS is an immunodeficiency disease, people who suffer from this condition often develop the risk of certain infections and a total collapse of their immune system. When used properly, marijuana can help with the patient’s well-being by stimulating appetite (which can help patients gain weight), reduce nausea, and elevate their mood. Marijuana also significantly reduces peripheral neuropathy related to HIV/AIDS, which implies a degradation of the peripheral nervous system.

3. Lung health improvement

Smoking leaves a damage on lungs and increases the risk of lung cancer in 50%. Tobacco smokers lose lung capacity over time. Studies show that marijuana does the opposite – it improves lung functions and increases lung capacity. These effects help minimize the carcinogen effects of tobacco and overall lung health.

4. Epileptic seizures control

The potential of marijuana to alleviate seizures have been known for more than a hundred years.  According to Lancet Neurology, New York University Langone Medical Center, ingredients in marijuana like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) control seizures by affecting the brain centers responsible for excitability control, thus regulating the patients’ relaxation. These results were obtained based on numerous trials conducted in theLangdone Medical Center.

5. Reducing Alzheimer’s disease progress

THC has yet another benefit to the body. In small doses, it can slow the production and growth of so-called beta amyloids – proteins that form plaques which kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer’s. This way, nerve cells are not under inflammation and can survive. Nerve cells do not have the power to regenerate, so this potential of marijuana is crucial. Researchers are very optimistic and hope to discover more about what this plant has to offer.

6. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) treatment

Multiple sclerosis is a difficult medical condition. It is a neurodegenerative autoimmune disease, which affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The body starts to invade itself, or to be more precise, the immune system cells attacks neurons. There is no cure for MS at this time. Marijuana significantly eases MS symptoms and improves brain functions. The active components of marijuana called cannabinoids act as a pacific unit by calming down the immune system so it no longer attacks the nervous system.

7. Crohn’s disease treatment

Crohn’s disease implies a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, in the majority of cases the end of the small bowel and the beginning of the large bowel. Symptoms are very unpleasant and are difficult to endure (persistent diarrhea, cramps, abdominal pain, fever, rectal bleeding, and more). According to The Crohn’s& Colitis Foundation of America, substances found in marijuana significantly help in reduction of gastrointestinal inflammation.

8. Arthritis discomfort reducement

Arthritis manifests in many forms: injuries don’t heal properly, persistent joint pain, morning stiffness, forefoot inflammation, and many more complications. A study conducted in China’s Second Military Medical University, published in the journal Rheumatology, showed that marijuana successfully fights inflammation in the joints thanks to modulation of certain receptors pathways. Not only does the marijuana have the potential to reduce inflammation, but also to repair the joints completely.

9. Neuroprotection

There is evidence that marijuana can help in healing the brain after traumatic injuries, concussions, or strokes. It does so by decreasing the surface of the affected brain. The protective role of THC is being tested in various ways, suggesting that marijuana can be used even as a supplement for long-term brain vitality protection.

10. Fighting cancer

Cancer is one of the most devastating medical conditions today, especially due to the amount of stress people cope with on a day to day basis. Cancer implies proliferation of cells that harm our body. The reasons they develop in the first place are numerous (decreased immunity, different chemicals, pollution, mutation, etc.). Cannabis oil has demonstrated the potential to inhibit or completely stop the growth and multiplication of cancer cells including the ones that cause breast, brain, and liver cancer, melanoma, leukemia and others.

Despite these strong arguments, the legalization of marijuana worldwide still has a long way to cross.
