If ever there was a movie I can 100% relate to it has to be :CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC!!
I shop when I'm happy.I shop when I'm sad. I shop when I get paid and I shop when I'm flat broke.
I am a full time student and I live with my parents to luckily for me I have no real expenses and I receive an allowance so I know how to work with limited funds. I have compiled a few tips and tricks which I discovered over the years to help me stay shopping and still have money to eat:-)
Get a job
Like I said before I am a full time student and I get an allowance from my parents. It used to be enough but I recently got really addicted to statement shoes so I decided to get a part time job to pay for my shoe fetish. The job is not glamorous at all. I do promotional work at supermarkets during the weekend (I'm that annoying girl handing out samples to customers) but it pays well, it isn't long hours and it doesn't interfere with my university work.
I am lucky enough to have a ton of good discount stores in my city. I did a google search for "factory shops in Cape Town" and got a list of all of them.
I will be honest a lot of these stores have terrible quality items, however don't let these stores put you off. I went to each and every store to find the stores I like. You will find stores which still sell good quality brands for less. A word of caution: INSPECT the item BEFORE you purchase. Often these stores do not allow returns.
I have had great success at discount stores and gotten brands like SISSY BOY,GUESS,RAGE and ZOOM for alot less.
Ask friends and family members if they know of any stores which sell brands at discounted rates. Through word of mouth I found a place which sells the most incredible jewellery for half the original price.
As I mentioned before this can be hit or miss. The stores often do not look very appealing but try to forget about the interior and focus on the clothes.
Vouchers and loyalty rewards
Vouchers are a true life saver, For me anyway. I know that I am addicted to shopping and I do not work all that well with money so I will NEVER EVER get a store credit card! I't would ruin me forever.
Most stores offer loyalty cards, where you receive 'points' for money spent and these points can then be redeemed for discount vouchers in store. I have loyalty cards for almost all of the stores I usually shop at. Most of these store cards are free as well and they often send you extra vouchers too.
Speaking of vouchers , sites like GROUPON is a great way to save money. They often have specials on discounted clothing or vouchers for online stores.
Having friends who are also interested in fashion and saving helps a lot. I very often do not know about certain sales until someone mentions it to me. Let your friends or family know which brands or stores you love so that if they hear anything via the grapevine you are the first to know.
Join mailing lists
you chain stores ,designer stores and online sites have mailing lists. It is free to join and receive an email informing you about upcoming sales and promotions. This way you can hit the stores before all the good stuff is sold out.
I am not the biggest fan of online shopping just because it is addicting and its hard to stop and the shipping costs are sometimes ridiculous. My biggest tip for online shopping is to find reputable sites which offer free shipping. Most of the time if the HQ of the site is in your city or country the shipping is free or the fee is very low. I have found 1 site http://www.zando.co.za/ which offers free shipping in South Africa.
Sharing is caring
This in another tip I am not very keen on but it works. I am lucky enough to have a twin sister, which means we can share clothes!!! This helps a lot when I have a fashion emergency or if I don't have what I am looking for.
The downside to this is, she also borrows from me:-( This is bad because I am the shopaholic in the family so naturally I have tons of clothing and I am almost always nearly flat broke and then she gets to do free shopping in my closet. But for the most part the annoyance is worth it if I am in a real pickle.
Towards the end of a particular season chain stores and designer stores have massive sales, up to 75% off!!
This is the perfect time to purchase wardrobe essentials such as jeans, coats, boots and timeless pieces of jewellery.
I hope that this helps youall and if you have any other tips, comments or question please leave a comment below:-)
Have a good day and happy shopping
