What can you Expect from a Tummy Tuck?

Your tummy tuck procedure can be performed at a hospital or on an outpatient basis. It will be performed under general anesthesia which means you will be unconscious and not feel pain. In certain cases, your doctor may choose to give you an analgesic which moderately sedates you before the procedure.

What happens during the tummy tuck?

During the tummy tuck, your surgeon will remove the skin and fat from the abdominal area between the belly button and pubic hair using a horizontal and elliptical shaped incision. Permanent sutures can be used to tighten the fascia over the abdominal muscles.

Your surgeon may choose to reposition the skin on your belly button as well. A small incision is used to bring out the belly button which is then sutured at a new position. The horizontal incision running from one hip to the other is then stitched. This leaves a scar within the natural creases of your bikini line so that you can still wear a swimsuit without having to worry about it.

You will be prescribed antibiotics to avoid an infection. Your tummy tuck procedure will take about 3 hours for completion.

Post-surgery care

Your abdominal incision may be covered with a surgical dressing after the procedure. There might be small tubes placed near your incision site for draining out the excess fluid and blood. You must position your bed in such a way that your upper body remains a little raised over the knees for a few days after your surgery. You must ask the healthcare team to help you walk around the first few days to avoid getting blood clots.

For any moderate pain which bothers you, pain medication will be prescribed. There might be swelling from the procedure which persists for about 6 weeks. For some patients, this may stay for over 3 months. If drains have been used in your case, you will be taught how to empty them and take care of the drains. Your doctor may also suggest you take anticoagulants for a few days after your procedure.

There will be a compression garment or binder that you have to wear on your abdomen for about 6 weeks post-op your tummy tuck. This offers you support while you heal and also prevents any buildup of fluids.
