STD testing: What's right for you?

The sexually active people should have sexual intercourse using the safe methods and regularly get tested. It helps avoid sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and detect a STD at an early stage. Please note not all sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have symptoms. A normal doctor or gynecology visit does not include STD testing; if you need it, ask your doctor. This article discusses what right STD testing for a person is.

Test for Different STDs

There are different types of STDs and doctors have different ways to diagnose each of them.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

One should get tested for this STD if the following applies:

  • A person having HIV
  • A man who has sex with a man
  • A person who has been forced to have sex
  • A female under age 25 who is sexually active
  • A female more than age 25 who is sexually active

HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis

One should get tested for it if the following applies:

  • A person who has another STI
  • A man sleeping with other men
  • A person who uses intravenous (IV) drugs
  • A person sleeping with more than one person
  • A person who has been forced to have sexual activity
  • A woman who is pregnant or plans to become pregnant

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a common STI and there is no specific test for it. A simple blood test can help test for genital herpes. During the blood test, it can be differentiated if it is Type 1 virus or Type 2 virus.

For women, the following techniques are used to test for HPV:

  • Pap Test: It is used to check the cervix for abnormal cells. It should be taken every three years and the women between ages 21 and 65 can take it.
  • HPV Test: It is often recommended to the women over age 30 along with a Pap test. It can be taken every five years to be on safer side. The women between 21 and 30 may have to take HPV test if they've had abnormal results on their Pap test.

Positive STD Test Results

If you are tested positive for an STI, it is necessary to ask your sexual partner to also undergo the test. Moreover, proper treatment is necessary after getting diagnosed with a STI. Please consult your doctor if you need more information.
