Sugar and spice and everything nice isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, according to several studies. With the 2010 Equal Pay Act, many people might have considered the matter to be settled. However, women are still getting hit from two sides with unfair economic strain- they are still only making 80 cents for every man’s dollar, and this study shows that basic essentials designed for women cost 27% more on average than the men’s counterpart. Overall, it adds up to an extra $453 in expenses per year- and we’re not just talking about tampons! Think that this article shouldn’t be a thing in 2018? These companies agree with you! So they decided to take a stand and fight back against the pink tax. European Wax Center The European Wax Center started their #AxthePinkTax campaign, a movement designed to bring attention to the issue and provide women with the information they need to make educated decisions about products they purchase. This campaign went live on April 2, 2018 and includes media partnerships with big names like Cosmopolitan Magazine, a website with educational videos, and the ECW Center Initiative- a discount of 13.51% on women’s waxing services designed to bring attention to the cost discrepancy. Perfect excuse to go get your eyebrows done! Boxed.com Boxed.com is an online retailer that sells bulk items like toothpaste, razors, and shampoo. They didn’t like the injustice of the male to female pricing model, so they took action! In addition to lowering prices for female targeted items that are more expensive than the men’s versions, they took a stand against the tampon tax! In every state where feminine hygiene products are taxed as a “luxury item” (nothing luxurious about it, am I right, ladies?), Boxed.com lowered the price of these products by 9% to offset the tax on consumers. Billie Shaving Club This is an affordable shave club designed for women! No more shelling out $25-$30 for razors and refills. It’s $9 to start and you get 5 additional blades. Compare that to the Venus counterpart at $13.99 for the razor and $13.99 for 4 replacement cartridges at your local CVS. All for the privilege (I repeat- the privilege) of shaving your legs. I mean, I like having smooth legs as much as the next girl, but not at that cost!
