In general, we do not pay a lot attention to the type of foot that we are wearing. Especially, during summer we all seek for shoes that will keep our feet cool. For many people flip-flops are the hallmark of the summer. However, flip-flops are not the best choice when it comes to wearing shoes. Yes, they are comfortable. Yes, they are easy to put on and take off. Yes, feet stay cool in those high temperatures. Yes, you can get your feet wet with them. Yes, everyone wears them. Yes, you can go almost everywhere with flip-flops. Yes, they are cheaper when compared to other types of shoes. But, flip-flops are not good for you, especially for the health of your spine. Yes, they are one of the most dangerous shoe types.
If you already suffer from a back problem like sciatica, spine injury, chronic lumbar pain, spinal arthritis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, lordosis, etc., wearing flip-flops should be avoided. They do not offer any support for your foot and ankles, providing only minimal cushioning. This will make you more likely to trip and fall. However, the most important effect is on your back and spine as it makes you walk differently than when you have other types of shoes on. When your feet and legs need to adjust their movements like while wearing flip-flops in order to compensate any shoe or feet problem, your pelvis tilts forward, increasing this way the curvature of your spine. If the curvature of the spine gets increased, there will be an extra pressure on your lower back and your sciatic nerve leading eventually to various back problems and back pain.
We are not saying that you are not allowed to wear flip-flops at all. Flip-flops are great when you are going to the beach. Or, flip-flops are great when you want to get something in your backyard or front yard. They are great when you are using public showers.
You can wear flip-flops now and then without a problem. However, do not wear flip-flops if you need to take a long walk or if you need to stand for a long period of time. They are not recommended when going to a grocery store, or shopping, etc.
You might be probably wondering what to wear in those summer days if not flip-flops. Don’t worry. There are healthier options available like crocs and sports sandals or hybrid sneaker sandals.
Crocks might seem like an odd alternative to flip-flops but yes, they are better for your spine and back then flip-flops. Their sole is usually non-slippery so there is less likely for you to fall. Crocks also tend to have a good interior support making you walk naturally as they stay on your feet. One good thing too is that crocks are lightweight.
Sports sandals are a better option for your feet and back then flip-flops. These kinds of shoes provide an actual support for your ankles as they usually have straps and toe guards.
