How spontaneous is plastic surgery boom

How did plastic
surgery become so accessible?

The need
for plastic surgery; or “chirurgie esthetique
in fashionable Parisian terms; is strongly affected by the usual marketing
images we see in our daily life. Even TV programs that look like neutral competitions
about cooking, singing or real estate usually let us forget that there is a
casting stage before and that among the first candidates’ selection criteria comes
the aesthetic appearance of the competitors. Image is very important today and
as long as most people on TV, internet and media in general look nice we get unconsciously
the impression that all people are fit, beautiful and fashionable. As such the
standard of beauty we receive becomes a must and we start looking at solutions
to look like all those we see every day in the media.

How far may the search for solutions go?

Accessibility
may be seen from two corners, the first one involves the facility we may have
to think about plastic surgery as an immediate solution and not as a difficult,
risky and complicated solution. This is stimulated by the fact that the famous
and rich people usually resort to it and these people tend to be considered as “a
model”. We end up having the impression that undergoing a plastic surgery is
very similar to going to a special spa or beauty centers.

The second
meaning of accessibility is related to the alternative countries offering plastic
surgery at cheaper costs. The rise of medical tourism and the emergence of new
destinations were the results of the increasing need to take care of one’s
image and to treat physical aesthetic problems even outside the geographical
and financial frontiers.

Is
plastic surgery directly affected by fashion?

The concept
of fashion is based on marketing, and like all things affected by marketing
plastic surgery is also affected by fashion. Whether it is makeup, clothing or hairstyles
trends vary from time to time affecting consciously or unconsciously our beauty
notions and criteria. As such what we may dislike for a while we may start
liking it when it becomes trendy or fashionable.  The body styles were also affected by these
waves of fashion and that’s why for example surgeries like Brazilian butt
lift
became “fashionable” the recent years.
Or else,
liposuction or liposuccion
(in French) that used to be practiced to simply remove fat, recently it became
a solution to sculpt the body by removing from given areas and injecting in
other areas. It is frequent today that a surgeon asks a patient to gain some weight
and come back for specific liposuction. Fat is used to give the body “fashionable”
curves.
