Shiatsu is derived from the word shi. Shi is a Japenese word. It means finger. Atsu, the last part of the word, means pressure. This type of massage is characterized by the therapist systematically applying pressure on the body using their knees, feet, thumbs, elbows, palms, forearms, and fingers. They focus on certain points of the body. Shiatsu differs from acupressure because it does not only focus on main acupuncture locations. Instead, it also focuses on the areas located in between acupuncture points. Oils and creams are not normally utilized during this type of therapy, meaning you can keep your clothes on in order to undergo treatment.
Basically, Shiatsu works off the premise that pressure should be applied perpendicularly in relation to the plane of your body. Pressure should then be held for three to seven seconds. There is more than one style of this type of massage. In most of them, one hand acts as a support and remains unmoving while the other hand moves up and down the meridian and applies pressure. Most often, the thumb and palm are used in order to apply this pressure. The amount of pressure depends on you and your needs.
Mechano-receptor cells in the body and your parasympathetic nervous system are activated during a Shiatsu massage in Herndon Virginia. This normally causes the patterns of the brain to experience a change, which promotes your blood to flow smoother, allows your body to experience relaxation, and activates the natural healing power of your body. Touch is the primal sense that is used during this procedure. It is used on the skin in order to cause a change to take place on a cellular level. This allows traumas and numerous emotional issues to be resolved and released in order for you to heal.
The roots of this therapy go back to 6th century A.D. in China. Its ancestor is a massage called Anma. Back when it all began, Buddhism migrated to Japan from China and brought various forms of Chinese Medicine with it. One of these was the Anma massage. This massage underwent some development while in Japan and began to flourish in the Edo period. Its popularity increased around the 1900s. During this time further changes were made in Japan and it became Westernized. This type of massage was introduced in 1971 to Canada.
The ratio of rubbing to pressing is one of the main effects of the modern method. Anma was 20% pressing to 80% rubbing. The common method is the opposite of this ratio: 80% pressing and 20% rubbing.
A professional that is trained in this type of therapy must undergo a minimum of 500 hours. This is true in various parts of the United States, in Britain, in Australia, and in Europe.
