I hate to admit it, but I am one of "those" people. The kind of person who starts decorating for Christmas in November. I cannot help it, I love the holidays. Gift shopping makes me happy. But, every year when I start planning, I have to pause for a moment.
That is because I hear that old familiar voice (mom's) in my head. It says, "You are not buying gifts for yourself."
In the words of Scrooge, "Bah HumBug, Mom!"
I believe that whether you are purchasing a gift for yourself or someone else, you always include a little bit of yourself in it. Regardless if you realize it or not.
The importance of this became quite clear this year. My nieces and nephews are now young adults. They come from a generation that does not conform to the norms of society. Being the cool aunt, I could not bare the thought of purchasing traditional gifts for them. They would most likely hate them or worse, find them offensive.
So with, pen in hand, I decided to find the best trends for non conformists. Here are some unique gifts that I found. And, now I want some too!
This is a gift that I would never have thought of before. But, it is the ideal gift for a person who likes to express his or her uniqueness. Let's face it, purchasing a gift certificate is boring.
You can make your gift more exciting by designing the tattoo yourself. To make it even better, add elements of yourself and challenge the individual to explore different styles. For instance, I am going to get my nephew to incorporate some of these flower tattoos into to his dark artwork. Like all tattoos peony designs are symbolic and somewhat feminine. I want him to have a little bit of me everywhere he goes. Besides, what better way for him to make a strong non gender biased statement than that? Yes, I am that Aunt. The one who encourages him to be different.
Move over Barbie, Greta Vendetta is more my style. From the Bleeding Edge toy company these "Goth" dolls are anything but conforming. In fact, they just may make Grandma run for her rosary beads. But, what is not to love about these collectibles? Somewhat dark, they are quite beautiful.
With 7 series of designer dolls it is hard to deny they are a popular trend with today's young adults.
Hollywood has always influenced trends in the gift and toy market. Things are no different today. In fact, this has only increased since popular television shows like Game Of Thrones, The Walking Dead and others came on the scene.
Different from children, young adults like these items for display rather than use. This can be anything from key chains, figurines and posters. In the spirit of Sheldon, if you buy these things, always get two. One for the person to share and use, the other for safekeeping.
Tip: Popular series are Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Virtually anything from DC Marvel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Batman, Superman and DeadPool.
This is the age of technology. It is hard to keep up with the latest gadgets even when you are a geek like me. If you cannot afford to give your loved one a self driving vehicle, why not consider a drone? So, it does not drive itself, but it can fly.
If all else fails a cool virtual reality set may just be in order for someone who likes to push limits and be different. As I lay my pen down, I secretly add a note at the bottom that says, "Santa, I would really like to be brave enough to get my own flower tattoos like these ones: http://stylemann.com/best-peony-tattoo-designs/!"
