Sports have been an intrinsic part of our lifestyles as
humans from the beginning of time. While in the past traditional sports were a
way of entertaining people and having fun with your family, today people take
to sport as being a full time option for their careers. There are millions of
sportsmen and women all over the world who turn their love for sports into a
way that they make their living. While there are lots of sports being created
every day, we would like to take some time to honour some of the oldest sports
in the world and look why their events are some of the more revered.
Boxing can certainly be considered as being one of the
oldest and most traditional sporting events as there has been evidence found of
its existence in 687 BC! In Ancient Rome, the sport was widely watched and many
people enjoyed boxing as a way to showcase their speed, strength and stamina.
The game became professionally played in the 16th and 18th
century here in the UK when it became popular in the Olympics.
Tennis came about in Birmingham in the UK between the years
of 1859 and 1865 and has remained a very popular racket sport that is mainly
played in singles (against one opponent) or doubled (between pairs of people).
It has become an Olympic sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages and from
all classes. Tennis originated as a lawn game, not too dissimilar to bowl or
croquet and grew in popularity due to its exciting nature. Today, tennis is
watched by people all around the world and its games are televised for everyone
to enjoy. If you are looking for upcoming debenture
Wimbledon tickets, then be sure to do so as soon as possible.
Hockey can be traced back all the way to the year 1363 and
was even mentioned in the 600 BC paintings in Greece. The game involves two
teams playing against one another and flicks a ball into the opponents net
using a hockey stick. So many people enjoy hockey due to its high-speed play
and skill level involved in manoeuvring the ball to make a winning shot.
Gymnastics is a very popular traditional sport as it tests
balance, agility and physical strength and people often spend their whole lives
perfecting the skill. Gymnastics is actually a development from horse riders
who used to mount and dismount their horse using similar movements to make the
whole procedure more graceful. It was first brought into the Olympics in 1896
and has remained one of the highlights of the event since then!
Polo can be traced all the way back to the 4th
century and is considered to be one of the most majestic sports in the world.
The combination of having to direct a horse and manoeuvre a ball throughout the
game makes it difficult to play and highly interesting to watch. This team
sport tends to have a reputation of being played by the royals and aristocrats.
