1. Increase in Height and Weight. At the age of 9 girls gain 17-18% of
their adult height and they usually grow faster six months before their first
period. Girls stop growing taller about 2 years after starting their menstrual
period, according to Healtholino. Also,
girls usually gain weight in puberty. It is possible that they have more body
fat along the upper back and upper arms, as well as along the thighs. Their hips
grow rounder and wider and the waist is becoming narrower. As you can see, the
whole body is changing in puberty. It is necessary that doctor checks a girl's
height and weight every year, in order to see if the girl is growing properly.
It is also possible that some girls become obese in puberty. In this case they
should increase their exercise and eat more vegetables and fruits.
2. Puberty Breast Development. One of the earliest signs of puberty in
girls is breast
development. Breast starts to develop before age 9 in some girls. When
girls notice that their breasts grow they should talk to their moms or older
sisters. They will help the girls with bras that should be comfortable.
3. Increase in Hair. Increase in hair on arms and legs, in
armpits as well as around a pubic area is also one of the first signs of
puberty. If girls decide to shave underarms or legs, it is best to consult
their moms. It is necessary to do it safely. It means that girls should use a
gentle shaving cream, a razor and of course water.
4. The First Menstrual Period. The first menstrual period usually
happens between the age 12 and 13, but it depends on many factors. Menstruation
may also start earlier or later. Most important is that girls should not be
embarrassed when they have their first menstruation. It is something normal and
it happens to all girls sooner or later. Girls should know that during the
period they should wear a sanitary pad or tampon. It is best to consult your
mom or some other person who will explain you how to use the pad. One more
thing to know is that it is normal to have delayed menstruations in puberty.
5. Mood Swings. During puberty girls usually change their mood and they become
depressed for no particular reason. It especially happens before the menstrual
periods. These mood swings are called PMS (premenstrual syndrome). PMS may also
cause anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbance, fluid retention, dietary
cravings and other uncomfortable symptoms. But, when your period starts, the
PMS symptoms disappear. Doctors recommend girls and women to excercise during
the period, in order to boost their mood. Also, it is possible that some girls
have a lack of self-confidence and they are not satisfied with their bodies.
As you have seen, all
girls are passing through the same changes in puberty, sooner or later. But, if
you are 14 and you still haven't any puberty symptoms, it is necessary to visit
your health provider.
