Food Combining For Better Digestion

Today, we are going to be talking about a topic which maybe you’ve never heard of. It’s something that’s maybe not on the mainstream radar but I think it’s really important. I was introduced to this concept about 15 years ago and it makes a lot of sense just intuitively and, also, science-wise.

So, let’s go over it. And, the topic we are going to be talking about is Food Combining. Now, Food Combining in its most general form is basically eating the right foods at the right time and in the right combination to make digestion easier. We want to make the digestive process as easy as possible and we want to be able to use as much of the nutrients that we consume for energy and making our body stronger.

So, Food Combining sets out to make that whole process easier. And this idea comes from the fact that when food goes into your stomach and it needs to be broken down that your body has to secrete enzymes and digestive juices to do that. But, the fact is that some foods are highly acidic and some foods are highly alkaline. So what happens is, those different types of foods need different types of acids and enzymes to break them down correctly, does that make sense?

So meat which is highly acidic needs a certain enzyme and certain potency to the acid in order to break it down. But on the other hand, carbohydrates like potatoes need a totally different enzyme and acid mix. So the idea behind Food Combining is this, we don’t want to eat those two types of foods at the same time and at the same meal because what happens is, your body secretes both of those acids and both of those enzymes and they counteract each other. They get in the way of each other. They don’t let the stomach do its job as best they can, so it slows down the digestive process. So, a lot of times you hear people having indigestion or acid reflux, a lot of times it’s because the food that they ate just can’t go through the system the way it should and a lot of times it’s because of the combinations of food they eat.

Alright so the idea behind Food Combining is you don’t want to combine those two types of foods together. It goes against the traditional American diet which is meat and potatoes. You don’t want to eat them together. And, if you are having trouble with digestion this is something you might want to give a shot at for a couple of weeks and just see how it changes your body. You might be very surprised that you didn’t have to change the food, all you had to do was change the way you eat it. That’s it.

Another idea in Food Combining is this, that when we eat fruit we are going to eat fruit on an empty stomach. And the reason is that fruit gets digested very quickly. So, if fruit gets digested really quickly we don’t want to have meat or potatoes and vegetables, we don’t want them in the way, in the process and have the fruit behind it, not being able to go through your body the way it should. In other words, it gets stuck in the process and it sits there, and it ferments and then, all of a sudden, it putrefies and you can’t use that fruit the way you were supposed to.

So, you eat fruit on an empty stomach your body uses it very quickly within 15 or 30 minutes completely digested and used the way it needs to be used, and then as you eat other food that food now doesn’t get in the way of that fruit. It already went through the process. So, you eat fruit on an empty stomach in the morning all the way up till noon or your first solid foods. From that time on you can eat solid foods and when you eat that solid food the idea is not to combine proteins and starchy carbohydrates together.

So, this is just the basic overview. We will talk more about this subject in the future, but I just wanted to give you a heads up on the concept. It’s something you might want to think about doing a little bit of research on because may be this might be one of the ways that will help you lose weight because your digestive process will get better and, therefore, your body will be more efficient.
