The Growing Competition of Schools for Fashion and Design in Israel

In recent years fashion and design has become a more commonplace profession, rising in profile to the likes of medicine or law. In the last few years, there has been a marked increase in the numbers of people registering for design discipline study programs. Although this is primarily in industrial or graphic design, there is also an increase in interest in fashion design. For example, the Ascola-Meimad College has seen an enrollment increase of 30% on previous years. This increase in demand has meant that existing institutions are expanding and new study institutions are opening their doors.

The Main Design Study Institutions:

There are five major institutions in Israel where it is possible to study design. The Bezalel Academy concentrates primarily on industrial design, jewelry, visual communications and ceramic/glass design. The Holon Academic Technology Institute has a School of Design where students can take courses in interior design, graphic design, industrial design and art design. The WIZO Haifa College has courses on graphic design, while the Hadassah College focuses on industrial design. The Ascola Meimad has a more diverse design curriculum, allowing students to specialize in jewelry design, graphic design, industrial design, interior design and computerized imagery.

For those interested in the design of Israel clothing, the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design recently added further design departments to supplement their established textile and fashion design departments. This means that whether students want to take a traditional approach to design or integrate new technologies, there is a course of study available without needing to become a student abroad.

The Differences Between Engineering and Art:

Much of the competition between the design schools seems to be based on the different approaches taken. The differences tend to be based on whether the school takes a more engineering approach or are based more firmly in the arts. For example, the Shenkar curriculum includes engineering studies, so it is considered to be less “artistic” compared to Bezalel, which integrates art studies in their design department. However, this belief tends to be fiercely denied at individual schools.

Bezalel is surrounded by a myth that individual expression is the most valued thing, but the faculty argues that a designer who has a massive ego is irrelevant. Staff at Shenkar promote that their courses educate to encourage a dialogue with the industry without a loss of creativity and spark.

The Impact on Israel Clothing:

Perhaps this increased academic competition is the reason why there is an increasing number of Israeli designers who are rising to prominence. In the past, red carpet events were an exclusive home to European designers, but with stars such as Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga seeking out Israeli designers, the industry is enjoying the spotlight. With some of the most glamorous women around the world wearing Israeli designers, the haute couture industry in Israel is evolving into a leading global trendsetter.

With new courses and sub disciplines being offered at existing schools and new institutions opening their doors, it is very easy to see that the fashion and design industry here is set to go from strength to strength.
